Default 88 Spec RST's

Why is the trim on early RST's called 88 spec when they came out in '86?

Who called it 88 Spec?? Most people refer to it as Pre '90 Spec. Or 86-90. Or early Series 2.

I know the correct name for the fabric used in 90 spec cars is Zolda but what about the earlier trim?
