Default Telephone sockets and Broadband Q?

Having had loads of grief from poxy Wanadoo regarding their 'live boxes' which don't work and their staff that are fooking useless piss takers
I'm thinking that it may be a better option to put a phone socket in my office so i can use the comp online in there.
Is it ok to run a socket using the usual wire etc...to the other side of the house when on 2 meg broadband? Or do i need some special wire and socket etc...???
Cheers Spadge...

If the signal gets a mile from the exchange to your house on copper wire, I guess you don't need anything special for the few metres in your house

I'm on their 2meg too, I've got an ordinary Homebase extention kit on mine and it works no bother. You'll need another filter if you're using a phone off it as well.

If you have a phone downstairs you will need to get a double plug! Plug the extension into one port and then a filter into the other one! Plus the phone into the filter and job done

Then upstairs plug a filter into the extension and the modem / router into the filter!

Any problems then feel free to contact me

i think if you use a master socket with the capacitor it needs wiring up different, but im sure you can cut out the capacitor and just jumper the wires straight off the original socket on terminals 2 and 5.

the phone wont ring but if it is just for the pc it will be fine with a filter

im sure some 1 will know for deffinate on here tho

The maximum distance using any cable from the main phone point is 10 metres, so if you loop of an existing phone point and relocate to another room the cabling must be withing 10 metres to the modem. Some people do go further than this with no problems other get reduced speed or connection droping.

My broadband filters only work off the main socket, ive tried running them from another extension in the house and the signal isnt strong enough. Not sure if you'll have this problem too or not Spadge.

just rememeber EVERY sockey in the house you have a phone needs a filter

not ALL extension leads have all wires punched down, hence some will work and other wont.

cat-5e would be the best option, but that's not quite as easy to do as telephone unless you know people in IT

hope that helps

spadge, time to pay back a favour :P

i can get u any size cat 5 cable u want, cut to length, and terminated both ends if u want. max length 305m, as thats how much cable is in the boxes :P

you COULD couple it if u want, but not sure if u would want longer than 305m anyway and over 120metres you get signal loss and would need a hub inbetween anyway

This cable would have to go all around the house to get to my new office and so would be at least 25-30 metres!
Just got off the phone to Wanadoo and they are sending me live box number 3 Hope this fooker works better than the 1st 2 which lasted 10 mins each
If that goes pear shaped then i'm moving lol

with respect Tony, that's nonsense.. i've done plenty of phone extensions up to 30 or 40metres, and use broadband with no problems at all, either with connection or speed. There can't be many internal phone extensions that are less than 10 metres..? Then there's the mile and a half of cable back to the exchange....

be aware that not all filters are the same - I've had to bung some cheap ones in the bin because they just don't work properly, they may work OK, but don't be too surprised if a cheap one is a bit crap.. either making your phone noisy or dropping the line on your Bb connection.

Why dont you get a wireless router & connect that into the master socket - then get a wireless network card for your PC - get em both talking (and secure) ....job done & no fussing round with messy lengths of cable!!!!

Default line

Just get some 8 wire, run it through the house, conect a secondary socket to it, Blue to 2, White of blue to 5, orange to 3, and a filter in the end, will be fine for what you want, I do it every day, (BT),

Not sure that you have read my posts on here properly mate but i have had 2 wireless box's from Wanadoo so far that died and am now waiting for the 3rd! The hard wiring is just a back-up plan in case this box goes tits-up as well
