It's a misconception that you need to install bloated codec packs (and unnecessary too) Long term, this will create confusion in Windows page-ranking codecs system for playing media files. You should really check out what you NEED first, using a codec-viewer/checker.
For a start, as an all-round general-purpose splitter/filter, install FFDShow multi-purpose (Read below)

Then go here ... http://www.doom9.org/
Go to downloads, and scroll down to find FFDSHOW ..
Install that and reboot. That's a good start. Post back if you need help with any others!

Something nifty like this on the system will show you what's installed for different formats ...

Ah! A bundle of (nicked from other people) codecs on a Czech site, 3 of which are not likely to be needed by average users .. Notice the FFDShow splitter/filter there?

How appealing

I'll have a look at it mate! ; )

Ha ha .. Dont think youre missing much!
Codec packs work fine/well on older versions of windows .. specially 98 ... but with XP, its best to install individually, it's been said.

Only install the codecs you intend to use. Codec packs are wank. All the codecs you should need basically is Divx, Xvid & a MPEG2 decoder if you dont have any dvd playing software installed on your PC. Or you could just get the VLC media player which has it's own codecs built into it

As I posted on the thread in Computers/IT, use AVI Codec to find out the specific codecs (audio & video) that you need for that file, and then specifically download just those, using the in-built web-links provided:
