I thought so to Rich, but they just aren't different enough or special enough compared with the already lovely standard car. Apparently change the wheels and tyres over on a standard one and they are equally as fast on track as well.
I think that junior CSL is gonna hurt values as well... its a M3 with CSL body kit and replica wheels I believe and a manual box.

Isnt the CSL 150kgs lighter then the standard M3, Im pretty sure there is alot more then just chaging the wheels over to making the M3 as fast, for 1 the main difference wheel and tyre wise between the 2 is just the super sticky tyres the CSL comes with.

On the road it is hard to tell them apart, as the power gains are only at the very top end, but on the track where you live at these revs it's a different matter.
The CSL also has better brakes than the normal M3 (but they are STILL woeful on track). I would not have a normal M3 given that the CSL exists, I would rather save up the extra and go for the CSL.

I know Iam gettin old when I say this the seats in the csl are the balls for track but not for a every day car, thats why I think I'll go for the standard m3 with the smg box and toys of course Iam gettin tight for space so I might have to build a new shed first

Rich,
Nope, I'd pay the extra for the CSL and STILL get the APs and slicks for track use...
The reason being (apart from the extra trick bits), the residuals on the CSL will level out and stay reasonable due to the limited numbers. The standard M3 will continue to drop in value due to how successful the sales of the E46 have been.

See, not that im in the position to buy one at all, but if I was I would only get a manual box. A friend of mine is BMW tech and told me of case where there was a engine failure in a guys M3 with the smg box whilst on the motor way, rear wheels just locked up and he was put into a spin at 90mph and couldnt do anything about it.
Obviously thats a rare occurance, but with all the probs he tells me about, engine failures being quite common, and the reliability of the smg box, extra cost, and just the fact that imo the only way to change gear is the old fashioned way using a clutch and gear stick, that would point me into getting one with a 6 speed manual everytime.

Soon as anyone every mentions E46 M3 they always go on about residuals
Check out www.bm3w.co.uk for plenty of these types of posts lol
Most of the cheaper M3 are either high millage, out of warrenty or dodgy colours like Seca blue of phonex yellow etc
The residuals don't bother me at all as its the only car I've ever had that I don't want to sell after 5mins recon it will look as nice in 5 years time as it did the day I bought it (simular to the wide arched E30's) the E36's are that special IMO.
So I intend to keep it long term... thats unless a good deal on a Porche Cayman came my way

How much better are these to drive than the old shape - like EIL's?
I drove the old shape for a while, it had an uprated exhaust that sounded incredibe, and loved the way it drove

Cool car Matt!!!!
I picked mine up two days ago and I think it is awesome. It's a Techno Violet Convertable with 19's, SAT Nav / TV, Bluetooth, elctric all sorts, SMG etc etc etc, the guy must have ticked every box. I also have the Hard Top, which gives the car a completly different look all together.
I went onto the BMW website and specced the car and brand new it would have cost £55,000 . My car is a 53 plate so just turned 2 years old, with 13,000 miles on it and I paid 20k less than the new price and I got it from a main dealer with all the warrenty and stuff. Either way, who cares about residuals. If you want the car, buy it, end of!!
The SMG gearbox is great I think. You can alter the speed of the change and in the fastest mode it changes gear as fast as my Lotus does with its sequential dog box, it really is that good. Plus you have launch control and all sorts of other cool stuff. Plus it will switch to full auto which is great for traffic jams and stuff. I have read a lot of storys abut the SMG box and unreliability, but there are millions of them out there that have done high miles with no probs, and it is the only option on the CSL. Lets not forget that the actual gearbox is the same on the manual and the SMG cars. I think a lot of the problems were early on and were fixed with software upgrades, or so I read.
Matt the sport button is awesome. It changes the throttle responce. In mine when holding a steady throttle and then pressing the sport button, the car lurches forward and grows a set of horns. Maybe your dads has to be run in fully before it comes on properly.
I would hate to see that CSL at 30k. Most of those are still going for mid 40's. For me I wanted a road car. I have a track car. The CSL has zero toys and I have been told is not as nice a drive as the normal car. I do like the CSL wheels and front end though.
Sean..
