a VERY GOOD post and a GOOD point I feel.

OK, I have had an escort 1.3, 2 xr2's, 2 rst's and a saff in my drivin time (apart from company cars, but they are borin and i wont include them)

I sold the cos due to the fact of it being an everyday car and costin £10 a day to get to and from work (70 mile round trip), but went very well (greens, 21psi, blah).

ive recently bought a 3k rst in radient red. It looks very nice, isnt without its probs but what 15yr old car is?

But ARE THEY CHAV??!!?

I do love the car, drives good, handling SUPERB, but LOOKS like a chav car I think, maybe me?

Have compared to quite a few other radient red rst's, and they are pink

fook it, its nice to drive, upsets the "so called" superior sports cars.

To some degree yes, but its the people who can't see the difference between the local chav putting spinner hubcaps on his 1,3 escort and in your rst.
My ex gf use to say it was a chav car because it had a spoiler and vents in the hood.
Tbh I don't care what people think about my car, as its the only one that gets polished and that much attention where I work.
People tease me that its and old car and its rusty but its nothing compared to the mk5/6 escorts.
Would be nice to drive a big bmw bit then I would have to be named muhammed and smell like garlic 24/7.

rs turbos are gettin cheaper now of late, well they always have varied in price in a massive way.

i think rs turbos fall into 2 brackets kinda. u have ya slightly doggie ones that have done high miles and the person has managed to afford it coz its cheap, so he thrashes it etc etc and doesnt care as long as the dump valve is working lol.

then u have ya cherished examples, either standard or tastefully modified and are always polished etc which will get admiring looks from 99% of people coz they arent flying past at 5k revs roaring from their peco big bore 4 back box

We are, but we are not the ones saying that they are chav looking. Its been talked about in the latest couple of threads, and I see people's point but what is not being taken into consideration is the fun vs cost factor.
I can only speak for denmark when saying that in the price range og max 5k the rst comes out as the most fun for money cars.
Maybe its the very low car prices in the uk that have a big influence on the thing, as nice cars like your 330i go for half the price that they go for here. And with all the grey import scooby's it has become easy to obtain a cheap fast car for very little money.
But yeah.. just enjoy what you have and worry less about what other people think.

people who call RST's chav cars are usually ponces in cars which they think make them important....i'd rather have my 'chav' RST over most modern coke can mobiles of today. look beyond the monetary value and chav doesn't even come close to to an RS turbo.....

people see the age of them as a bad thing aswel but the fact that they can spank most modern 'sport' cars just says alot IMO.

Even though I was the most vocal on the subject of the RS Turbo and saff being a bit "boy racer", they are most certainly not chav.

Unfortunately, the word "chav", thanks in most part to the mainstream media, has lost all of it's original meaning, and now refers to pretty much anything non-standard, which is quite rightly wrong.

In my eyes, a chav car is something cheap done up in an attempt to look better - take your typical basic Nova or any other really nasty cheap little car, and then 10 times its value whacked on the mum's credit card and spent on crap, in an attempt to make it look "sportier" or sound faster than it is ever likely to be.

Having said all that, it may not be chav, but it certainly is a little bit "barry". All you have to do is go to a cruise, spot the kid who can afford to buy it but not properly maintain it, getting out the car with jeans, white trainers, excessive amounts of gold chains/bracelets, lambert and butler hanging out the mouth etc etc ( actually sounds a little chav )

Anyway, while the minority of RST and saff owners are probably on here and members of clubs etc, and fairly nice people, a fair proportion of owners are complete and total wankers

ive never liked the mk4 shape anyway so no id never take my wife out in one.. course a s1 rst id be only too pleased to own as long as its totally mint and std

I'm 30 and would have another one today if I could, I don't see them as you've quoted above, I see the RST as an approaching classic and something I wasn't old enough to drive when they were new, I've had a couple in the past though, but I will get my hands on that minter one day

RSTs are without doubt pretty Chavvy, 3dr Cossies are Chav but not as much as RSTs. On the bright side Scoobies are 100% Chav. So on balance Ford RSs aren't COMPLETELY Chav but still yep pretty Chav.

As for the comment that people over 40 think there piles of SHIT I totally disagree...I'm amazed by the number of people over 40 stop me and ask about the car [although they usually think its a cosworth] because they USED to own one.

Also I always get people of ALL ages comenting its a nice car [in the petrol station for example]. What other car gets so much attention?

The people who think they are shit are usually the type of people how think buying a BRAND NEW car automatically makes it better than any thing older!!

Example:

A mate of mine spent £10k on a specced up 1.2 Clip [added some 17's] and loved it...worth every penny of the £10k which he had to finance!! Took him out for a spin in the RST for 10 minutes and he was in love!!

ok my view on this, i bought a rst for one real reason, and that was in my opinon its just good cheap fun, I will drive to a show, spank it round track and drive it home, if it breaks big deal i will fix it and drive it until it breaks again as parts or cheap which means it will still be a fun toy rather than an exspensive waste of time like the cossie where your scared to cane it cos the engine just cost you 3k)

I for one don't think my car is a chav, none of my mate's do, and the people down the local cruising spot don't think it's a chav car. In fact, it get's quite a bit of attention, and quite afew people respect it

I dont think any standard ford is particuarly chavvy, but the vast majority of RST's seem to be, im not taking ones from the RSOC etc, im talking the ones you are likely to see at the local mcdonalds etc.
