Default Help required - headlight ducts

As you know, I have been having cooling issues with the car and want to get some cold air into the engine bay. With this in mind, I want to do something like Shonky's with the inner lights removed.

So all the people that have done this, what have you used for mesh and have you ducted the air in anyway?

Pitcures would be most helpful .

i would have used mesh for mesh and ducted the air into the engine bay by removing the inner lights.

if you did would some rear facein lurves (SP) be a good idea to help a sort of flow across the engine bay

Andy,
Yes, get your coat .

This is what I want to use, but I was wondering what people use for mesh when they do this. For example, a speaker grill, as this could be bought shaped like the headlight?

Come on peeps, I've seen loads of cars with grills, but have never looked close enough to seee what was done...

Rob,
For the hot air to be removed out of the engine bay, the louvres have to be facing the way they are on the car, as the air passing over then draws the hot air from out of the engine bay (as my scorched vents prove - and that's despite a heavy duty Spec-R heat shield and happened at high speed cruising and NOT with ALA )

What about raising the rear of the bonnet, ( I know it may be a little chavvy but i does work as it causes a flow through the engine bay)

or a light weight perspex bonnet, no more hot engine temps as ya can stand beside ya car with ya Mcchicken sandwich meal and tell the other chavs how fast ya car is

I want to get cold air in as well and I ain't no chav, so the bonnet lifting is out of the question .

I also believe that this puts a strain on the bonnet catch and given how and where I drive, I don't want the bonnet to flip up and I don't like bonnet pins.

Ginge, I was thinking more about two 4" K&N trumpets with some speaker grills as mesh?

Someone must have done this ?

Why not use a section of grille the same as what is fitted in the front bumper, cut out to shape and bend the ends around the headlight hole from behind and bond it on

....because the mesh on an EsCos bumper would let seagulls through it

Michael, you can get pliable/mouldable speaker mesh.... Any decent audio place will have, or have access to some.

Alternatively:

A: Direct cold air feed straight to turbo, utilising a pair of your old tights for filtration....

B: Just stick a K&N cone in the inner light aperture straight to turbo...(outside of engine bay so no hot air drawn from engine

Demon Thieves do a plastic inlet duct for about £15 each which fits behind the mesh fog grilles perfectly, chanel these into flexi spiral wound hoses into the bay around the cooler

They look original as well so no chav appeal. I had them on my 500 bumper feeding into the original airbox with an extra inlet in the base of the box

What about some sort of scoop from enderneath or from the bumper grill.

Some of that alloy duct with some scoops on the end maybe.

Just a thought.

Thank you, some half sensible replies from some people .

Just to point out I can't use the fog-light grills, as the offside one is already utilised to feed cold air to the airbox, as per the OE arrangement on the Escorts.

I like what John has done to his (I knew I had seen it somewhere ), I just need the grills and the ones from Maplins sound ideal.

Any more for any more?

Tony,
I have no idea, that is the whole point in me having my car. I enjoy finding the solutions to the problems . If I couldn't constantly think of ways to attempt to improve the car, then I would get bored .

I haven't got any pics, BUT.............

I removed the inner headlight and fitted a recessed alloy spun trumpet (that Pipercross sell. I then used a 6" speaker gril, and "modded" it to fit - looks pretty good to me!

i would doubt the air flow capabilities of speaker grilles at high speed, but as you know, you'd have to test it

Hardly a "chav mod" mate. They fit perfectly and do a fantastic job of stopping stones flying onto oil coolers.
