Default How unsafe is it to run a car in gear on axle stands?

Think the clutch on my escort may have stuck and have been advised to start it in gear, and run it with the clucth peddle down to try and free it up.

Question is....is it reasonably safe to put the car on stands just off the floor and run it in the garage?

Should be safe enough on axle stands mate, just make sure they're well secure before doing anything though

when i bent my old mk4 escort in half i had it up on stands - in the mud lol and held it on the limiter in 5th for a few mins untill my mum had a go at me

had the fooker off the clock at about 160 too pmsl

ps, i didnt even think of the safety issues back then, but if it were to fall off it will only stall

You only need the front up in the air after all, just make sure the back wheels are nice and chocked.

I do it at every event in the morning to warm up the gearbox oil and brakes before setting off.

Done it, no problems but didnt fix the problem so the box is coming back out.

BillyCabrio, thanks for the advice, however I am glad I didnt put the front in the air and leave the back down.

Not a problem if its securely on the stands, there isnt enough vibration or torque reaction to shake it off a decent set of stands.

video it just in case though, at least yuo will get some cash back fromyou've been framed if it does go wrong

It was a bit dodgy, due to the fact that the clutch is stuck so I had to start it in gear and if it had come off I couldnt dip the clutch

AFAIK, a cossie flywheel is different

A Cossie clutch will not fit a normal 2.0 Pinto flywheel, and Im pretty sure its too large for the regular 5 speeds bellhousing too.

Indeed, the Pinto crank has (iirc) 7 flywheel mounting bolts whereas the cossie has 9...............

Plus ive ran mine on axle stands in the garage loads of times.....no probs.

Some ppl moan about the cooling fans at rolling road not being up to the job while some ppl run their cars flat out on axle stands without any cooling at all.
