right, this is the one i have, where the 3 lugs come through the top plate you can move the plate side to side slightly until the lug touches the sides of the hole, other ones ive seen on mondeos etc have a rubber bung bonded on to the lugs so you cant see the lugs at all, presumably to stop them moving, just wondered if this is what the escort ones are like?

the rubber bungs are sort of shock dampers like the springs on a clutch plate, it will work without them but as you turn the air con on it will shock the compressor, you could keep the revs down as you switch it on to reduce the shock.

It won't make a difference anyway as varying temperatures will make the clutch cycle in and out and you could be at any RPM when it happens as it's dependant on gas pressure and the rate that the fans cool the refridgerant.

You can buy a new clutch kit for them which will have the dampers in it. You just remove that centre bolt and it will be reasonably obvious how it comes appart.

thanks for the info,i can get another plate with them in ok,i just wondered if all esc cos ones were like this as its never had any in,whats the one on yours like steve?its obviously come from the factory like this as the rubber bits are bonded to the lugs and cant be removed but i thought it would prob be more noisy without them ?

Mine have the rubber lungs I think I will check in the morning. But Daz is right the comp will kick in and out when requiered when it's switched on forgot about that.
It won't be any noisier in operation as it will immieiatly be under tension.

i was thinking it might be noisier when it isnt being used due to the lugs touching the sides of the holes

The shocking effect will eventually cause it to fail.

the rubber bungs are just a damper to slow down the movement of the clutch plate when the electromagnet is energised to reduce the clicking noise when the clutch engages. take it from me, i work for a compressor manufacturer for 10 years
