Very strange speedo problem
When in 5th gear and from 90 mph onwards (coming on boost), as i accelerate hard, the speedo has a fit and goes to zero , but as i back off the throttle goes straight up to the speed again
Doesn't do it in any other gear or when accelerating gently
Anyone got any ideas??

but the speedo is ok at that speed in 4th gear and the car accelerates faster in fourth, so it can't be a case of not keeping up. The only connection i can see between speedo and 5th gear is that the speedo drive is in the tailcasing with 5th gear, but why would that affect the speedo?

the mainshaft in the T5 has the speedo drive on it, 5th gear is sat behind teh last taper roller bearing before the speedo worm gear, if you loosing drive to the speedo in 5th id be tempted to get the box looked at before it turns terminal, may well be the bearing is loose,
do you get any noise from the box ? does the clutch work ok ? no oil leaks from the bellhousing area, if the nose/release bearing carrier comes loose at the front of the box teh whole gear train can move forward as this holds the front taper roller in

Jonno,
I'd suggest trying a new worm drive for the speedo cable in the box first as it must be a mesh problem.
However allthough that may cure the 5th gear speedo problem in the short term as Mark says it does sound like a box problem. The speedo gear is on the output shaft of the box and 5th gear sits outside (i.e.rearward) of the bearing assemblies of both the output and main shaft. This would mean that any bearing movement would probably exagerate any movement in the output shaft when in 5th gear (and hence the speedo drive) and maybe why the speedo drops its reading in 5th.
(This is only a guess mind you as I have'nt come across this exact issue before)
