Default question about rwd mk3's/4's

Just out of interest really...as i think something of this scale is beyond me..

How come some cars have the gartrac wings(i assume for clearance of the rear beam width etc

and some dont i.e spadges old one. IMO the gartrac arches look shite so if ya can do it without, why do it with?

the genuine gartrac fitted cars were made by gartrac

they fabricated all the floor and moved the front wheel base forward for the 4wd

they are as wide a sthat because i think they use the mk2 escort suspension and use a wider track

cars with normal arches basicaly have a sierra floor poan in them and the wheels just sit under the arch to give the standard look

As above really the gartrac kits are for wider track.

I have both arched and unarched cars just now

Lee you basically shorten the floorpan and weld it on. Not quite that simple but you get the idea

If you have a look in thew restro section there are 2 threads with this being/been done

Mate of mine is doing it on a mk4 shell justnow, will try and sort some pics if I remember

once built i take it is a Q? And does it have to undergo SVA tests etc?

i have a mint sierra hatchback..and i mean mint...undersides like new...but im on about getting rid. Would this be a candidate for the floorpan? If so ideas are running thru me head

I would imagine it would need to be on a Q plate, we only use them for track so never have to worry about that side of things.

Yeah your floorpan would be perfect for it, we just used a normal 1.8 saff and there all much the same

heads ticking now!

What happens with the front inner wings(for engine mounting) and the rear inner arches? Does it all line up with the escort shell? I take it the bulkhead of the escort is cut to shape of the sierra tunnel?

i reckon it would be easier and cheaper to just buy a rwd shell, there are a few about. think there might even be one on ebay at the minute?

Sierra front inner wings and lower half of the bulkhead are trimmed down to fit on the escort, likewise with the rear inners.

Lots of work involved but it can be done. Brom or JC can both do the conversion for you if you dont wanna do it yourself

Phil it can be easier mate but not always cheaper, I didnt pay much for my rwd shell but spent over a grand on front suspension and steering already. If I had used the sierra floorpan I could have just bolted all my bits I had right on to it. But then again I dont have to spend all the time welding the floorpan in so its not all bad

I've been thinking about this a little bit as I want something RWD.

To be honest I prefer the idea of an all new fabricated tunnel etc... rather than welding in something out of another car [screams cut and shut to me!!] Something along the lines of what Steve Scott did to PF Bens Fiesta [but actually finish it].

Could it not be longitudinally CVH like some of the sierras????

I think the fabrication is probably the worst of the worries..choosing the axle/suspension/box etc.... + Stuff like changing gear/clutch cable cooling etc...etc... would be jsut as difficult

THen you need to make it handle
