Depends on your budget. How about a Seat Leon, classy looks and come with 5 doors as standard.

Missus has a Focus TDCi,cracking car but don't think you'll get one for Ł5k yet. The older Focus still have the ancient diesel lump in from 1973 IIRC. Still useable tho.

I reckon the best family diesel for economy (and speed) is a BMW 3 series .. Theyre well nippy .. Check out the specs!

Focus are shit long term .. cost a lot to maintain after 4 years.

115bhp
Of pure diesel thrust! Actually a really nice car to drive, and it does shift, loads of torque, just not enough revs.

Focus are shit long term .. cost a lot to maintain after 4 years
Why do you say that mate? What have i got to look forward to??

Plynchy ...

I work for Ford mate .. I know what's inside .. I'm not just looking at the outside ; ) They are a good drive tho .. but hardly have character.
I run a Mk4 and a Beemer.

I too would go for an Audi/Passat or BM 3 ser.

In a word, yes.

Go and test drive them both at a car supermarket type place and see what you think.

Personally i don't like the focus, yes the TDCi looks impressive but i reckon a 110 golf would see it off quite nicely.

Diesel BMW's are pricey..

Have a look at A4's as you can get them quite cheap.
