My rack is fooked, and i've got a spare but the pinion shaft is shorter

Am i right in thinking that the column should pull down abit( extend) to make up the difference?

the triangle part at the bottom of the steering colum will pull out,but becareful as it has a plastic suround where it fits into the rest of the colum.make sure it stays in place or you will end up with loads of play in the steering.
