Default Best breather systems 4 cossys-Sorted now-THANKS EVERYONE

Please help me people.....

Been looking at various breather systems and cant decide whats best.

I want it all done in jic fittings and ive got about 500-600 quid spare.

Wheres the best place to get one from as ive been buying lots of pro alloy stuff but i want a breather system what works really well, not saying the pro-alloy one isnt any good. Ive been pricing up the graham goode kit which comes with all the hoses and jic's, are these any good??

Any advice??

Cheers

For a stage 3 (assuming that means just a T34?) i dont see why you want anymore than the "normal" upgrade of a pipe out the head to releive pressure from the cam cover and a pipe from the normal breather on the block, into a seperator and then oil back into the sump

I've got a GGR setup, unsure of its BHP limits as the car is not done, but its the best made kit i've ever seen, but then again for the price it be.

I think it depends on what GGR setup you want as there is about 3 stages of it.

but seemed to work well on the previous car it was on up to 500bhp

Yeah its a stgae 3 with t34, and just want a good breather system!!

The graham goode one was 590 with all the fittings and aeroquip hose.

From talking to karl he tells me some of the systems are crap design so was just checking out what people use and what works best

Karl would be a good person to ask for advice, as he certainly knows his stuff, but i dont think you will have any issues at that level of tune.

Ive never heard of anyone getting excess crankcase pressure on a good conditon stage 3 engine when using any of the "normal" breather setups.

Braided lines arent needed either TBH, but they do like nice in the bay!

Ive got a castle performance stage 3 engine in mine and that has got the baily breather system which i have had no problems with, its a tidy setup and it also means i can keep my standard air box as the cone filter on my last car was noisy.

what makes me wonder is rally X cars run a very very simple setup, and there probably the most highly tuned vs thrased YB's out there?

Makes you wonder who to take advice from.

I guess everyone has the own opinion of what works and what doesnt, same as everything.

The best one is the SCS WRC version. The only problem is that the entire inlet has to be removed to fit it....

Yeah i was speaking to Karl the last time i was there and he sed he does a bretaher system but its very expensive...

Yeah goodridge fittings arn't essential but i think they look very good and IMO look very sexy indeed!!

Its Dingys fault i like the goodridge fittings, every time i saw his car it was just jic'd to the max!!

Im more confused about it than i was before now

Is it essential to have a take off point from the rocker cover??

Yep, very good reason for it too!

Or the cam seals can blow out!

Narinder,
If you have to ask you can't afford it . It is a horrendous job to fit it .

It requires the sump to be extensively modified, as it has a -10 fitting that goes to the front of the sump and a -8 to the back of the sump. It then has the usual -10 under the exhaust manifold all feeding back to the breather. And if you're doing the "works" spec, then also the hole where the kidney goes (by the inlet manifold)has to be machined out and tapped and this is where the breather sits (hidden under the inlet manifold). However, you then have to remove the dipstick tube and dipstick and fabricate a new one with a different bracket etc. Finally you HAVE to use (and Dave will like this ) Aeroquip, as some of the angles are quite obtuse.

However, once fitted, you couldn't tell it even had a breather, unless you knew what you were looking for.

I would say with all the work required to fit it, you're looking at approaching Ł1k .

i beg to differ chip.

I think its a matter of preference.

Seen loads and loads of very high powered YB's without cam cover breathers.

Although i do see the point in them as stu did explain a while ago about pressure build up.

Why does it need to breathe from the cam cover then?

Here's a prime example.

I've used this as the example as 99% of the public regard this as pretty much the best specc'd cossy that graced the planet.

NO THE CAM COVER BREATHER IS NOT NEEDED In fact if the engine is going to rev above 7.5k, it is best AVOIDED .

If you have a breather point in the cam cover and rev the engine above 7.5k, be prepared for a third of the contents of the sump to end up in the breather catch tank after one 20 minute session round Donnington .

I just thought idea of breathing from the cam cover was purely because most normal shitty breathers use the other side of the block as a return, and don't actually return to the sump.

I took Mike's advice and breathe from both sides and return to the sump, because that's what non-dry sump race cars do, and if it's good enough for them etc etc........

Depends on how you do it Mike, pipe size is important and so is where you vent it to.

Personally i would say go from the cam cover to the block to equalise the pressure between them, then out the top of the block to the breather, ive found that works very well in the past (on engine that rev over 7500rpm too).

wow so many replies to read with so many different views!!

I was wondering about the cam cover as ggr sed its not needed also....

Karl told me his breather system is very good but again be preppared to spend a grand!!

Id design my own but TBH i havnt the faintest what works best, so i kinda guessed the ggr one would be good and its handy as its has all the stuff needed to fit it on your car!!

Has anybody got any diagrams of how it should be pipped up as i am even more confused to what will work best on my setup!!

Thank you all for your inputs to my problem

Here is a pic of the SCS one i used to have fitted to my 500hp engine! If you want a load of bufty tanks scattered around your engine bay then this one won't be for you as as you can see from the bottom pic its not even visible once the engine is fitted.
