here we go

Ok, so just because Im not spending 500 quid on a pair of technics... blah blah blah

I may not even use the fookin things, but now that I have bought a new place, I will actually have some room..

assuming I get into it etc, then I can always buy some decent ones.. Seen too many people waste like 700 quid, then sell up as they get bored..

Yes, but there's starter decks and then there's starter decks Westy!

I started when I was about 11 with a starter pack bought from Sapphires or somewhere similar - was aonly a couple of hundred quid, but it didn't really teach me anything I needed to know.

Cheap belt drive - like ones off the top of an old stereo wont allow you to mix anything. Touch the record, and it'll probably knock the needle clean off!

Belt drives are near on impossible to speed up slow down with touch because of the belt - I remember having to use the speed adjuster to match the speeds. Moving to direct drive was like a revelation!

Decent direct drive setup will only be about £300 with a decent mixer

I appreciate the advice Rich, but I knew all that already

Ideally direct drive.. yes! but find me some for 25 quid and we can talk Lets see how I get on, then I can always upgrade..

If you've only got £25 to spend on decks, how the hell are you going to afford to buy records to mix with?

Unless you're gonna try and mix and blend your mum's old Frank Sinatra vinyl collection

If you can mix you can mix on anything regardless of what they are!

Technics are the bollocks but just for a mess around you can beat a bit of belt driven action

Get em mate! You could do worse!

Rich.. you are TOTALLY missing the point on this one

I can afford many Technics lol.. Its not the money ffs lol.. Its more the point that i get bored VERY quickly..

For 25 quid, job done Mates have records and can buy records I assume a record having being played on cheap decks will still work on technics after

As it seems to bother you, just get me a decent set and see how I get on

So you bought a 500 quid set of technics.... which you later sold Mate, this is why I only want some cheapy ones 25 quid.. big deal

Also, move into a new gaff in october, so money will probably be abi tight then.. and obviously have other priority's

Should be a good crack tho..

Westy - mayeb I have missed the point. I thought you were attempting to take it semi-seriously...........

I sold my old decks to upgrade to better ones etc etc......... I sold my 1210s on Ebay for far more than I paid for them, and I regret it sooo much.

However, I simply can't afford to buy records at the rate I used to buy them when I was a student

I see your point Westy, and it would be the logical thing to do.... but Rich has a very valid point - if you want to give mixing etc. a go, then buying a £25 kit will frustrate you beyond comprehension and turn you completely off the idea!
If you spend a couple of hundred quid on a direct drive starter kit you're much more likely to enjoy it and progress, and if you don't like it then you can always flog it in the local papers etc. to some kid before Xmas for half of what you paid for it (Ie., only losing around £100 or so.)?

I disagree totally.

I've had more decks than I can think of:

technics, sound labs, KAMS, Gemini, Vestax etc etc the list goes on and on.

If you mark everything against technics then you will moan and complain about everything.

If I go round someones place for a mix and they only have DLP 1's or something i'll make a joke of it and then get on with it - simply because I can

For 25 quid you cant go wrong westy - and if / when you do ever get technics you will appreciate them so much more.

And if you think mixing on belt drives is terrible and hard work try doing it on the parcel shelf of a mk3 fiesta!!!

and guess what? I still did a wicked job.

Well I disagree with you again.

It's not about whether you can mix - the point is, Westy can't. I could jump on any set of decks and mix perfectly well - I've been doing it long enough, but that's the point.

You'll be able to learn to mix properly a shit load better and more quickly on something where you don't have to worry about waiting for the belt, and a load of other distractions.

This is about learning, not ability.

As for mixing out the back of a Fiesta, I've never tried it, as I'm not that chav

Yeah but Si, you're a bit handy and could probably mix on a 1920s gramaphone, agreed?
Westy's starting out, and might find it a tad more difficult to get into it and enjoy it if he's strugggling with equipment that's not too user friendly. I think that's the point here?

yes, its purple .. mushroom shaped and sproutong from the middle of your forehead!

for beginners , belts are 'ok' but you're fucked if you move to directs as I found out when i was a nipper.... bought some technics at 16 and couldnt mix straight away.. had to kind of relearn...

KAM belts arent too bad though.. very cheap and feel cheap.. but as long as they work i guess......

and rich, you shouldnt rely on touching the platter to get it in pitch.. you SHOULD pitch chase (moving the pitch slider to adjust for the timing rather than keep pressurising the platter spots or squeezing the plate pin - middle of the record- )

I disagree there mate.

I've used direct drives that are harder to use than some belt drives.
Its my own personaly opinion that the budget range of decks (100 to 250 each) are hardly any different from each other.

No one ever listens to me anyway so fuck knows why I'm bothering to post! (at least I know mroe about decks than YB's )

I see everyone's points and very valid

Im not wanting to be some up and coming superstar DJ.. more abit of a laugh when mates are round etc.. If I get the Bug for it, I can always progress off of these 25 quid gypo ones and get some technics...

Ive played on 1210's before and do appreciate the quality etc.. but these will do fine, just for now
