Default BMW Z1-Just seen one, how strange are they!!

Just went shopping and in pulled a BMW Z1 next to me. How strange are they!!!!

Bloke got out, reached back into the car near the front seat then the door raised up from the sill and locked

Never seen one before, what is the spec of these and what are they based on....3 series??????

they are based on an e30 3 series and have the same engine as an e30 325.the silver button you can see in the picture raises and lowers the doors and windows if they are closed.there is a handle on the inside for when you get in.not bad little cars really!quite rare but we get a few in at work.

Good enough for Jeremy Clarkson's wife .. She's got one (or had one)
Based on E30 325 M20 6-pack engine .. The pop-up doors were a nice bit of engineering.. They drop into wide sills. Was about 50K new in '88 if I remember right .. and good ones were worth about 20K, last time I checked!

My father had one back in 1990 when they were new, could have done with the m3 s14 lump in really for a bit more power ,we had our one chipped by ggr ,went well after ,was cool driving down the road with the doors down ,also good to see the ladies getting out in the short skirts Also had the first ever z1 smashed up in for repair ,car was about 2months old front end went round had to go on jig ,took about 7 months to repair as parts went back order ,new bonnet was Ł1500 if i remember total repair was well over 20k.

just to clarify they were produced between '88 and '91, although the first one was released to the media in 86. they were cool cos all the body panels were removable.

What I like is they have a rear diffuser to keeo the back end stuck down. If you consider when these cars were made. Its foward thinking

But other than that they are a 1 trick pony.
