Fitting a T5 to a 3-door GL shell?
ok, chip has told me that the cossy gearbox cradle thing wont fit the GL shell as it doesnt have the slider things?
so is there anyway i can use the type 9 cradle on the T5?
i dont mind drilling a hole straight though the floor and using bushes etc

Yes i reckon you can modify it to fit the type 5 cradle mate, just wont give you the same sort of adjustment.
What year is your shell though, i believe from C reg onwards they may have changed, mine is only the way it is cause its pre-cossie (A reg in my case)

are they really necassary tho?
i mean, as i dont know much about the 3-doors, once its all bolted up is there much room for adjustment?
basically i think im gonna struggle to get the slider bits really, hence just fitting all the engine and running gear, and then where the cradle sit just drill through the floor and bolt it up

Just makes it easier to install the engine and box, and given that you will be fooking around moutning a different engine anyway, i would have thought that element of movement would be invaluable.
Plus if you dont i will take the piss out of you constantly, referring to you as a "nonslider dodgy replica owner", cause im a bufty with sliders and im getting it written down so it says so on my logbook and i will look down on you if you dont

PassionFord Post Whore!!
Every saff ive seen has the 'sliders' in the tunnel so what about chopping some out and welding them into your shell not that difficult if your decent with a welder or wont be expensive to get someone to do it either.

Near the bulkhead in the tunnel but dont know what will be there on your shell, nothing probably. If youve never welded before then i'd get someone to do it for you mate

the change over year for the sliders was 84 so you might get lucky!
magnum engineering do a DIY cross member kit for the T5 into an early shell i believe, not sure what it consists off though? you might have to weld it together unless they designed it to bolt together

Testing the future
4x4 is different, there's no slider in the right place for t5 x-member as that's where transfer box sits. so make sure you get the bit of floor from a 2wd shell.

i would have thought the easiest job would be modify a 3 door T5 crossmember to fit your floorpan, the 3 door one is steel rather than alloy like the saph cross member...

yeah the type 9 ones are steel too, problem is the cossie rubber mount is completely different, the type 9 box has only one fixing point dead center, but the T5 has 2 points either side of center

It would be alot easier to just make up a new crossmember, to fit your car
once you have the engine and box,in place. Mine has the sliders, but didnt
use them, the steel to make a new cradel cost about 8 quid, and i used
escort engine mounting bushes, about 3 quid each, and it only took a couple of houres to make, It took longer to drill it all out to lighten it
