The main things you have to do for converting to 4 x 4, the front chasis legs need half moons cut into them to allow the clearance of the driveshafts. Also the tunnel needs replaced or modified to allow for the drop gear casing or transfer box! the rest more or less bolts on the diff ratios allow you to run the 7.5" rear diff along with the 4x4 front diff. but you will need the gearbox, front diff, front engine craddle, front drive shafts, both hubs then your front suspension needs changed there is a fair bit of work mate, my project car is just about finished and has been off the road now for 10 months but should be good when finished!

I have cut them out to mirror the 4x4 chassis legs, as without them the clearance would be minimal.I would imagine they are cut a bit! you must have a different tunnel as well eh spadge?

The tunnel has been modified a little on the left of the drivers footwell.
A hole was made and then a new piece, with a curve to it, welded in to allow clearance for the transfer box!

Ok I had a whole tunnel from the 4 x 4 welded in so as I could use the standard gearbox mount. same idea! Just out of curiosity have you beefed up anything apart from the gearbox to cope with the power you run?

Front diff is a ZF plated item using a Quaife thick casing
Rear diff is a standard 7.5 incher and will remain until i start to break them
Front driveshafts were replaced with brand new standard ones just to be on the safe side
Thats about it for now

Cheers for the response guys
Doesnt sound like too much work actually - I had visions of the whole transmission tunnel needing modifying etc. I assume most of the bits are available from breakers at reasonable enough prices?
what are the limitations of the 4x4 transmission up to 400bhp? Is it daft money for a decent gearbox?

You want to tell me about snow? HAHHAHAHAHAHAH There isn't much snow in the UK anyway compered to what we have here, so I still don't know what is bad about 4x4 Cossies in snow. I did a few kilometers this winter and it was great fun and very easy.

The best thing in snow is a good driver In fact always good driver is the most important thing, than it can be 2WD, 4WD, 50HP or 500HP. Anyway Escos is fun to drive in snow (with proper winter wheels), I don't think Sierra will be much worse.
