As said above BUT watch you dont snap off the lugs that the crank sensor picks up on.

Just use a big hammer, that'll shift it

then you'll need to spend around £100 for a new bottom pulley (what it cost me when mine had to be replaced by a previous owner not having a pulley puller)

Is the engine still in the car Spikey? if so, put it in something like 4th gear and get someone to put their foot on the foot brake while you undo the bolt.

Pully puller......
sometimes known as hub puller.

is the engine out? otherwise you don't have a lot of space to use one.

if you haven't got one, how about warming the pulley up with a gas torch?

ideally you want to use an air hammer action wrench jobber or even one of them electric wheel nut hammer action tings.

it's hopefully got threadlock on it, and these should break it open.

Pull harder then

To get the pulley off the crank, DONT use a puller that hooks round the back of the pulley - you will likely muller it.

You need the type that bolts into the holes in the pulley (they are there for a reason )

Probably need to remove the rad first

Neil.

Remove the starter motor, then use a decent size screwdriver (large with flat end) to lock up the flywheel solid so that it cannot turn. Then you should be able to remove the nut on the pulley,........

impact wrench, that's the thing. either air or electric. you'll have trouble getting in the space though.

a shock is what it needs, rather than pure torque. if you can get a breaker bar on it and twat the welly bar with a fbh that should do it

If you cannot get an impact driver.....then try undoing the nut with the extra leverage that you would get from a torque wrench.........Or use a long bar extension tube thing.

All of this has to be done from under the car.....SO MAKE SURE THE CAR IS ON STURDY AXLE STANDS FIRST!!!

As the amount of leverage that you will be using could just slide the car off a jack......

not a good idea to use a torque wrench to undo stuck things. if the torque applied is too high it can easily send it out of calibration.

always use the proper tool for the job - in this case it's a breaker bar. halfords do a damn good long one for a good price.

and if that still doesn't work.

Use big breaker bar wedged against appropriate part of car (ie. chassis leg) and flick starter this always works.

Just don't let anyone stand too close though.

Mattie, are you sure about this??????????

Pistons will move up & down......SOME valves will be fully open (down)!!!!!!!!!

OK smart ass

Put belt back on and time her up, quick flick of starter, no chance of valve/piston contact.

Works for me anyway

Spiky,

As someone has already suggested, you need to shock the pulley bolt off (not just pure torque).

The starter motor trick would also be my last resort but it does tend to work when all else fails.

When you do get a puller on it, b careful where you put the puller arms (i.e. on the supports of the pulley) as SO many people (me included) have snapped the bottom pulley by not doing so!

Thats why I said to use a proper puller for the job Phil

As you say, someone (not me!!! ) snapped one of the CPS tabs on mine

There are 3 M8 holes around the pulley - theyre for a harmonic balance puller

Neil.

Spiky, get a loooong breaker bar, rest it on the driver's side wing while the socket's in, put the car in reverse and turn her over... that'll get the nut off

Nah, seriously, lump hammer on breaker bar did it for me, pulled the pulley with a jobbie (harmonic balance puller) I got from local motorfactors, has three bolts that attach to the pulley. Soak it in WD40 the night before, came off like a dream - but that's not always the case apparently...
