once you apply they should send the current owner a letter to there last address, they should have a set time to reply until they issue you the new documents, Not sure the time but considering you must have sent them the v62? they then write to the owner and await a reply, and then send you the new form, it dosn't seem long enough?

RSSteve- The DVLA and Council have been trying to contact new owner for a LONG time before I even thought about it, like said, well over a year. Its just in such a quiet location it keeps slipping thru their towing/crushing net.
I get the impression they glad to get this abandoned car away from them!

Surely the owner must have died or something?
Random like you say how it's not been towed away.
Have you got the car running etc yet? It'd be gutting to spend all that cash then the rightful owner take you to court or anything. In that case, what would actually happen?

Fantastic!!!! Fair play to both of you!! It's fucking genius if you ask me!
Value your car, look after it, if you don't you'll pay the consequences!
As far as the S2000 goes, I'd try selling it back to a Honda Dealer "sold as seen"

Real, everyday people dont just 'loose' their cars or forget about them, when did your parents last forget they had a car and just give up on it.
The circumstances when you just 'forget' you had an S2000 are like when you've had to leave the country in a hurry, or when you've just been sentenced to time at her majestys pleasure and there is no one on the outside to sort out your affairs for you or when you are inadvertently dead.
This sort of stuff is a mugs game, yeah you got a nice car to run around in, you might even make a shit load of cash if you sell it, but when the real owner shows up and wants his car or the money is when it all goes TU

LOL Fair play for stav for doing it, if I was in his position i would have done exactly the same! But, its a bit like fostering/adopting a child, if stav adopted it, he is the legal owner, but at the minute, he's just fostering it, so the owners can come get it, so it COULD get nasty!!
Fair play tho, hope he has fun in it!

can see it now 6month wait for a log book from DVLA because so many people finding cars
So does it need to be on the abandon vehicle list? or could it be on private land? I'm going to wind a mate up because I know he doesn't open his mail
you gonna sell it or will it be seen at a drift day

if its on private land ie a driveway you got no chance but if its parked on a public road and with no tax then you can go for it,wheather your succesfull is another story but as proved with both me and stavros it can happen.

Could you not find a list that goes yes?
It's only going to get worse with the olympics coming to London. You'll have Russians, Poles, Ozzies, Dutch, German, Korean, Belgian, French, Spainish............... etc etc etc. All in groups of about 50!!

Course I am, hence the pic I posted up, its my car, youve pretty much relinquished any rights to it leaving it on the road untaxed etc anyhow, hence why the dvla have let me have it.
And the odds of them magically appearing is mentally slim, and frankly considering the situation the 5-0/courts would prob decide in my favour regardless.
A change of number plate would be the first job tho.
And yes I can and will sell it, if I didnt the council would themselves.
Went to Honda today, parts dep closed till tues, but they said no bother, can get me my keys within 24hr, costs about 35quid, so will have em wed.
That gets me in to the car, but keys are coded so it wont start, car needs to go to dealership for that, which will be a job for a tow or a trailer.

Nice one Steve.... when you get inside and find 10k of Coke or a big bundle of cash in the glove box you wont need to sell it.
If it was me I'd have had a low loader pic it up already- dont need the keys to winch it on the back... my mate reposesses cars with his all the time and never has the keys.
You HPI'd it?

Apparently you get loads of decent abandoned cars on army/navy bases about the place.
My brother in law has told me about different cars and bikes that get left when folk move on. Apparently its very difficult (impossible?) to claim them though.
You folk have just been silly-lucky though. Nothing decent gets dumped locally and the council crush them quickly.

Cant fault you really, im all for making an easy buck. But you have to ask why would someone forget about an S2000 unless they had died with no other relatives, or something very dodgy. As a few have said i would be quite worried really as theres a chance it 'could' go horribly wrong at some point, especially if the reason its been left for so long is 'dodgy'.
Full credit to you for it though mate, but remember that you are the still not the legal owner of the car, and only the registered keeper, same with the cosworth that started the thread. So its just you that has the responsibilty of keeping it taxed, tested, insured if on the road etc and thats all the dvla are bothered about, so your technically not the owner.
If the owner does show, which unless he/she has died with no next of kin, will almost certainly happen at some stage, then would you be responsible to give the legal owner the car back or the money if youve sold it on, probably yes.
If i got the chance to do this, i probably would. But i would certainly keep the car and use it myself so that when the owner does show, you can just give the car back. Selling it on is not the way to go with this imo.
