The thing is, people CAN forget they own a car. Me and Stav both know a bloke who had a bunch of cars, and just parked them around the place. He was walking somewhere one day and was admiring a Range Rover he saw parked up. It took him a while to realise it was actually his!!
The S2000 could belong to a trader who bought a load of cars, and forgot about that one, or someone who died and whose family couldn't face tracing and selling it, or someone who's inside, or someone in a coma, or someone who had to flee the country, or someone who got so fed up with the car breaking down they lost heart and dumped it... the list goes on.
If you follow the correct channels and you can lawfully be the owner then go for it! If the actual owner either can't be arsed, or just can't claim it then tough luck!!
I'm chuffed as fuck for Stav and hope he gets the car with the minimum of hassle.

my eyes are gonna be wide open on the look out for un taxed cars.
Some people are just complete c0ck5 sometimes, comparing water features and cars
TW4T.
Good on the pair of you, starvros and gaz
Stavros hope you make a mint!!!!!
There is a company near to me that will come out and code keys and generally a lot cheaper than main dealer.

Most likely a drug dealer, who had more cash than he knew what to do with.
Gets banged up, is not wanting to have to explain a 15k car whilst on the dole to the old bill.
By now will expect it is long gone, crushed by the council.
IF he really wanted it, surely he would have had someone collect it, especially if the council are writing etc.
Get it traded in at a garage far far away and enjoy the cash mate.

This is one of the most interesting threads I've read on here, I can't believe how jammy some of you have gotten! My eyes are open from now on haha.
Ideally in a perfect world, you would "claim" your car before moving house or address. Don't bother registering it at your new address and just sell it in the mean while. This way if Winston ever comes looking for his car, he'll have one hell of a problem.
Failing that, register the car in a fake name and still have it delivered to your address. When the owner comes looking for it, say you don't have a clue what he is talking about, and it must of been the guy who lived there before. Say you have only lived there for a short time lol. If you could get use of the car which you are benefit from, then I would say just use it openly. Then if someone did come looking for it, you could just hand it back over nicely. However I imagine most people would find cashmore beneficial
Depending on what circumstances the car was abandoned over maps out what chance there is of someone to come looking for their car. If it was a drug dealer, you can guarentee he is definately not going to go looking for his car again, as it obviously started gaining alot of heat at the given time. Unless they are small time, they are not going to start risking their freedom for a 10-15k car. If someone fled the country, they are most likely not planning to return, and if they're dead, they unfortuanetly don't have much choice on the matter. Any vechile untaxed on a public road/place, which is NOT SORN is basically asking to be given away, if not ruined.
Time to go car hunting!

Thing is, if the owners is say banged up and the car was important to them, so important they would go hunting for it on their release, then they would have had someone go get their car asap - wouldn't you??
They clearly don't want the car, and after a year or more, do they really expect it to still be around?? Are they really going to go tracking it down via the dvla, the old bill etc etc?? Not likely.
It may even be a single bloke, parks up, goes off somewhere, has a heart attack and drops down dead. He place might be rented, and so after 6 months when the tax runs out, he place is gone, he is uncontactable, nobody thinks about his car and so there it sits.
My only worry on a car like this, is what happens if the owner turns out to be a legit bloke, and for some reason has been out of the country for whatever reason or something. Then returns. Is he able to press charges for you selling the car?? Your only the registered keeper, not the owner, so can you sell it??

Done this a few time when i was working for a garage rental company, i used to get given the cars in leu of payment BUT! there are 2 sides to every storey, here a tail of a similar thing but from the other side (happened last week actually) and taken form a forum i frequent.
"Two years ago our 1970 Merc 280 SE was nicked from the garage where we had put it after the fuel injection packed up, it had sat there for a couple of years and one day when we went to look at it, it was gone and an old C class was in its place. It wasn't insured and I thought we'd seen the last of it, especially as the police didn't seem to understand what had happened and didn't think the old C class had anything to do with the case.
Not so, the bloke who nicked it didn't pay his council tax, the bailiffs arrived on Monday to clamp the C class but decide the 280 SE is the one to go for, matey then locks himself in the car to prevent it being removed, then Plod turn up, run the plates and find out the car is nicked. The thief's day rapidly turns to . as he is arrested and the car is hoisted onto a truck and taken to the pound, he spends the day in the cells and is charged with burglary.
We have just got back from reclaiming the car from the pound, the thieving scum has fixed all the mechanical faults but has let the paint get very dull.
On the way home the brakes slowly faded away and the dashboard lights didn't work but all in all I am very pleased, unlike matey who is left threatening to sue us for the money he spent fixing our car. rofl.gif rofl.gif rofl.gif rofl.gif
His story is that the car was obviously abandoned so he got a V5 in his name from the DVLA and therefore the car is his. rofl.gif rofl.gif rofl.gif rofl.gif
The change in reg happened well before we noticed the car had gone, so it's a mystery to me why it didn't come up when we reported the car stolen.
Anyway, It's a happy ending for us and a suitably miserable one for the garage burglar who has lost all the money he spent as well as a boot full of crap tools and some awful cassettes."
The V5 does not prove ownership! a recipt does and thats how me mate got his merc back
Another one involves a 5 grand roller and a garage that lost the 5G they paid for the car when the owner "got out"
On the other hand my wifes 2 door Mk4 escort estate was "purchased" in the exact same way some 8 years ago when i worked for the garage company
you takes yer chances

Abu Hamza's son used this loophole on cars in long stay car parks. Apply to the DVLA for the logbooks, owners didn't reply within two weeks - voila you now own £1m worth of luxury cars
