So this car now has two log books? The original keeper obviously will still have one in his name (assuming he is still alive) and you have a new logbook in your name.
Ive heard the same process being used by villans to clone cars, cant believe the DVLA can be so irresponsible to basically give away a car that isnt theirs to give away (taxed or not).
Hope it works out for you mate, but IMO its just plain wrong.

Sorry but aint the old owners name/address on the log book ???? You can look at this 2 ways
1. Left it where it was and let it get smashed up etc
2. Do what you have done .Saved the car
Im sure if the old owner is away when he returns he will sort it if he wants it back, untill then enjoy it !!! I would of done the same as you matebbut wouldnt of sold it i would of kept it

Mte just spent coupll of hours reading the thread and good F***KIN luck to you mate i would of doen the same thing if i knew how to or if i knew where a car was parked up not taxed etc etc, neways mate is just one of those stories where you want to know what the reasons for a car being there what happened to the owner ec just out of curiosity if you know what i mean???
But i would of done the samething so you aint a car theif you followed the right process and make your self a quick bit of cash??
So was the registered owner local etc or from another county etc etc obviously if i had the oppertunity to bag 15k i wouldnt realy complain or look for the owner!!! but mayeb you did??
And obviosuly when you found it at the pound was their damage as to where they had forced entry in and crashed the car in to the mans garden was their damge to the key holes etc ignition barrel and to tehe steering where the steering lock came off!!
I personally think it must just of been a fellow who had pulled few fast ones tax fraud dodgey money etc etc and just left the car to get of the area pronto and left the steering lock on so people didnt suspect anything in the few days he needed to get out of there
But as said before WELL DONE

Ah thought that was reason he got vin number so easy
But on a totally different subject
Surly the dvla/aa/rac or any hpi check type company giving out a vin number to anyone would jus incourage cloning i mean "jus phone up and you have your new id"
Have to be honest my mate had a road car which he fancied using for autosprint .track days etc
But he went and bought a identical car which was allready track preped which had no id as been raced for years also many new panels inc floor sections
OK SOUND ALL ABOVE BOARD I HEAR YOU SAY!!!!!!!!!!
except a few moths down line his road car failed mot BIG style
So he just swapped id from his road car to his race car and got a mot on that and used his ex road car for his track weapon
I personally think this is fine as hes not doing any harm as has both cars and mearly used a unregistered car to kinda reshell his without actually changing swapping more than basic road equipment lights/ mirrors/road legal exhaust/tyres

Little bit like squatters rights (in a way)
Interesting storey! Funny how these loopholes exist, and Im sure there are loads about.
Right, off to look for some abandoned cars.
Would be a little scared off my armed mobster coming and looking for his esCos after a spell in the clink!!

the moment i saw that i thought right im gonna do something about this because i could guarante someone else would.
me and my mates still to this day cant think why or explain why it was left just parked yes parked on a public road for so long, dont know how long it was there before i came across it but as stated before tax was well out of date.
the only bit of damage on the car when i went to see it after getting log book was to the drivers door the top part had been wenched ajar abit so someone had also clocked on it had been standing.
well this all happened end of 2002 start of 2003 and today im afraid i no longer own the car i sold it to a mate who when heard about all this wanted 1st dabs at it.so i sold it to him in the state i got it as in the pics you see ant the start of the thread(and yes he knows full well the full story of how i got it,made a dam good bit of money on it too)
heres how she looks today
and yep the reg plate has been changed since

im the registered keeper of my golf, my mum is the registered owner, so if i sell it she could take me to court - why should u and your cossie be any different.
downright theft IMO.
you want something like a cossie u work for it, not just nick anyone elses, loophole or no fucking loophole.

Just read this post some of the comments are obviously from people that have no clue of how things work, how do you think scrap yards etc.. sell on insurance right offs cat c and d's... they go down the same route.
i work for a borough council in the workshops and i get on well with the guys who do the abandoned vehicles, they do the same thing when a half decent motor is abandoned or surrendered, they apply for the log book and sell the vehicles on, or keep them for themselves its all legal.
what gaz here did was all above board anyone can do it, if you saw a motor sitting some where for ages then yeah inquire about the log book, you may get it.
I would of done the same thing tbh, but can't believe how long that cossie stayed there for, my old man goes nuts if a car sits out side his for than a couple of days lol, and also i moved my old frst on the the road from my drive (with no tax on it, decleared sorn) left it there not even 24hrs i had a sticker on it and got a fine a couple of weeks later, so i don't know how this cossie was still there.
well at least someone is enjoying the cossie instead of it being crushed, smashed and burnt by kids etc.... to me gaz you saved the cossie, another one lives on the road

at least this one has been done technically legally by the book, and as said above its better to have it saved than not. anyway who cares about the moral/ethical argument, insurance companies are a bunch of idiots anyway! plus, there must still be LOADS of cossies out there which are ring'd up on dodgy identities.

First time ive seen this post but i say well done mate, the car would have been destroyed by now, either by crusher or vandalism, if you leave a car on a public road with no tax you will lose it, doesnt matter if its a metro or a cossie, well done.

Anyone with half a brain would have got £20K of car moved to a safe location, not left on road with no tax for a couple years.
Asking for trouble, simple.
