I had a similar thing happen to me.

My first car was a mk2 XR2 i was doing it up at 16 so couldnt drive it, it was sat waiting for me to get to 17 and pass my test. I spent a fortune on it and what not. I had a mate who would help me, he knew cars well and what not so from time to time he would lend the car to drive down to his girlfriends in Doncaster (i live in Manchester) and one day he just never came back, never heard another thing from him

I called the filth and they couldnt help me, because id lent him the car it wasnt theft, it was a civil matter and there was bog all they could do. They did try and help me by asking donnington police to go round and tell him to hand back the car, they even spoke to the AA on my behlaf asking if they could tow the car for me but they wouldnt do it!!!

Anyways he ended up selling the car to some woman and the first i heard about it was when i got a letter from the DVLA saying someone was trying to register it and what not, I called them saying it was mine and it had been stolen, i passed round the phone for a few hours but ended up talking to the top dog at the DVLA in charge with this sort of stuff and he basically told me that i had no leg to stand on, registered keeper and owner are two very different things so a V5 was to be issued in her name. He did call her and told her the situation trying to get her to get her money back off the tit who stole it and hand the car back to me but she was having none of it.

That was 9 years ago so the car was worth a fair bit, it had just had a full respray and looked the dogs bollocks, my first car and i never got to drive it because of this stupid loop hole

sad thing is there will be a lot more to this story I'm sure. Someone earlier in the thread prob had it pretty close I reckon on the stored up/owner away and car was stolen and left there by the thieves (you said yourself the door had already been pryed open)

Everyone says about people being jealous and they'd really do the same, I wouldn't. I'd of gone to the registered owners house, there must have been a way to track them down.

You would have known the prev owners address so why not try and do this?

I still think it's a pretty underhanded thing to do.

And for those that say nobody moans about an old shed having this happen, ofcoarse they don't they are abondoned for a reason (ie mot out, knackered, not worth taxing etc) there WILL be a better reason for that car being there IMO

Wonder if the original owner has come forward yet and tried to do anything about it, you will probably never know.......i'd imagine due to what you did is entirely legal that they probably just didn't/couldn't do anything about it........Maybe they just couldn't read?

amazing story, just read the whole topic. i imagine its just one of those things where u will never really find out what happened at the time of the car bein dumped. i would be inclined to drive past the previous owners address to see what the situation there is, then again they might not even be in the country now etc etc.

Just read through the post and think Gaz has gone down all the right channels and has been advised by the police and DVLA.
You are well with in your rights.

Did you ever post up the original reg to see if anybody new any history, or was that a bit risky incase someone off here knew the guy who owned it and that opened a can of worms................................

AT least the cossie went to a good home and is now back on the road.Because if it was round our way i can guarentee it would of been vandalised, burnt out etc well done mate i wish i had found it.my theory is it was probly's a drug dealers car,and it was getting noticed too much so decided to abandon

if thats the case then surely hes best bet would of to make the car dissapear period(storage/strip it/ etc) and not just leave it parked on a public road..........................did he think no one was gonna come across it

Cant believe people think it would be an armed robbers car. Now that is bright to use his own car in a robbery ROFL.

Also all these people saying that Gaz is in the wrong, as if you lot wouldnt claim it if you could. Maybe jealousey that it wasnt you who found one.

Fair play m8.

What a load of tosh for anyone on here to say that they wouldnt have done the same PMSL

Yeah maybe in the WHOLE SCALE of things, its not morally right to claim someone elses valuable property without knowing the facts, but at the end of the day Gaz did all the proper procedures etc by law, and therfore gained the benefit of his actions.

ANYONE on here would have done the same. If someone came up to you and said:-

"Hey....theres a £14k Escort Cosworth sitting at the side of the road for two years, if you fill in some forms, make a few calls, and nobody claims it......you can have it for free!"

I am sure that ANYONE would have snapped this up. No question.

I would have done the same, and am now constantly on the look out for any Series 1's, or Evos etc that may go along the same path HA HA HA

It makes you wonder just how many proper valuable cars there probably are though, sitting in gardens, lock-ups, garages etc....that owners have owned but then either died, been locked up for a long time, or just plainly disregarded through lack of interest. Theres probably hundreds of thousands of £££ worth of cars, across the UK just sitting tucked away somewhere unclaimed.

I must admit though, this smells VERY much of a case of some Drug Dealers car thats been arrested and banged up, or been used for something very dodgy and left, etc. Alternatively seeing as it had a steering wheel lock on it, obviously someone did at some point care enough about it to stop it from being nicked.....so the person may well have unfortunately just been killed, died, had to go abroad at short notice etc....they could even have left the car situation in the hands of a friend who has completely forgotten about it.....and hence this situation.

Either way good on Gaz, i would do the same, BUT i would be very concerned in the back of my mind too that someone one day might come knocking at my door with a rather large basebell bat and a Dobermann LOL

i know of a simmilar story but cant say to much as it all got out of hand but a bloke was coming home from a cruise in his cossie and decided he would go int his town and have a few beers with his mates [fair enough] i hear you say but at around 2:30 am decided he had enough and headed home when he bumped into a few more mates .thinking he was king of the roads the [dick] decided ill show off a bit and said he would give his mates a lift home knowing he was over the limit nuff said to cut a long story short pissed youth in a cossie with mates is why we all pay high insurance premiums today but what happened was he knocked a girl over i must stress not causing a fatality but still bad enough .any way being a complete twat decided he was going home instead of stopping and drove off well what happened was he got half way home and ditched the car in a feild as he couldnt face up to what he done he claimed he was hijacked on the way home the following day from the cruise and that was that for about 2 years as the car was reported stolen he was paid out and everyone that new was paid to keep quiet.well the car was found 2 years later what happened was the farmer found it and moved it to his barn and his son done the same thing thinking his luck was in and sent for a log book and called the police to check all was ok and all was i [iknow what your thinking] but what had happened was it turned out the bloke just used his herbal supplying incometo buy the car and he didnt even have a licence and was known to the police so he payed people to be quiet and just cut his losses with the car and left it there to rot so it was never insured and there was never a pay out but because this bloke is known for his job and status no one was saying any thing but the car has now been claimed in the same way and the chap just boasts good luck to the bloke that claimed it the story makes me sick but the claiming of the car is fair enough and perfectly legal so im off now to find an abbandoned car

Well done! One thing I will say is this - I was going through this process around two years ago after spotting a 240Z sat for ages.

I was advised by the DVLA that I would be the KEEPER of the vehicle but the OWNER could at any time exercise his right to get the car back or recoup the book value if I'd sold it. FACT...

It's not quite as cut and dried as this story has turned out so far.
