i've got an XDA2.

it's a bit big as a phone but i can run satnav software and do loadsa other stuff on it so that more than makes up for it

i got mine on ebay. it was unlocked so i just put my old t-mobile sim into it.

the xda is available on other networks under different names!!

I got an XDA2 free from work, nice at first, bit of a novelty but lack of keyboard renders it mostly useless, haven't even touched it in months, just waiting until it's been forgotten then it goes on the 'bay

yeah thats what i was thinking, size isnt really that much of an issue, as it would be more of a PDA and a business phone, and will have another mobile for my personal number and for taking out socialising.

and the Satnav is very very appealing as im forever travelling

Hmmmmm

Would want to get one tied into a contract i think as there is no way im paying like 200 for a foookin phone

Got a Nokia 9500 Communicator...

If you can put up with smarty pants's asking why you have the TV remote with you its good quality phone with loads of really nice features like Wi-Fi, Camera, MP3 Player, syncs up with Windows etc

I just did an upgrade on my existing contract.

The trick is to go to the shops as they often have units that people have taken out of the box to look at. Got mine for a steal...

If you arent bothered about Wi-Fi then the 9300 is slightly less TV remote ish

Really? Whatever gave you that idea, Ish?

XDA2s (or variant) all the way, why carry a PDA and a phone when one device will do? Whack a 1GB SD card in there and you're laughing. Built in wi-fi, etc..

Have even converted people with 'ladies' phones that the slightly larger size is worth it when you consider the possibilities - mostly business people who are more concerned with workable tools than fashion..... (although I reckon the XDA2s look pretty cool, but then I'm a gadget freak)

Depends if you want Windows, PalmOS or other (Symbian).

I use the PalmOne Treo and are quite happy with it. Small enough to be good as a phone. Lacks some Windows compability but otherwise its great.

has anyone got for their 2s/2i

a) software so u can say "channel up" or "channel down" and the IR will change the tv channel

b) press a button and say "play media" to which it responds, "what would u like to play" and then proceeds to list out all the mp3's on the device

quality...

thinking on GPS tho, mate showed me tomtom, how cool is that???

not so sure on the IKEA map plugins tho

so we think the XDA2i is worth buying over the ipaq then?

ps i want this for an ORANGE sim... im assuming th xda can be unlocked for this?

the main thing i want is to use the thing as a modem... connect via wireless (be it Bluetooth or 802.11) and then get the phone to connect to GPRS / 3G

not used it as a modem mate, but they can be unlocked, i think u can pay someone a tenner over ebay and they send u the code over email. Software shud be easy to find tho i reckon.

what i will say tho jim is that the camera on the 2i is neigh on useless compared to the 2s. But the 2i runs are 520mhz as opposed to the 2s 400mhz.

although the camera is a 1.3mp, the camera is really really bad, its .3 on the 2s but is a lot lot better camera.

any more questions gizza shout.

Jimbo, I have the 'Orange' model XDA aka SPV M2000..... (but most people don't realise it's actually an HTC Blue Angel rebadged by ALL major telcos... (qtek9090, XDAIII, XDA2s, SPV M2000 etc. etc.)

If you want 3g for a laptop, then you're possibly better just getting a 3g pcmcia card? Would only recommend the XDA sized stuff if you were looking for a Pocket PC/Mobile.

Ipaqs don't seem as good now HP are involved, and I have to support them for my mobile users - glitchy and troublesome from my experience, whereas the XDA2s/M2000 has been superb, plus it has a better screen (sensitivity etc.).

Ish, I need to upgrade my maps, was driving through fields on the way back from a meeting the other day

Jim, if your primary reason for 3g is high speed data, then the card makes sense

Explain yourself more clearly next time

bill, it aint my primary need, but i really dont see the point of having a 3g pda if it cant link up with my laptop.

my PRIMARY need is that it must be able to do tomtom satnav

My mum has one of the new Communicator thingys and loves it! Bit of a brick for my liking but it has a brilliant keyboard on it for firing away emails just like you are at your desk working

Phil - Where have you been? I have just got my other car painted and wanted to takes some decent 'motion' pictures. Seeing as you normally around the corner (even when I spent 99% of my time at work) LOL and your photography skills are almost as good as mine....we need to hook up and mess around with some lenses.

Jim, hence why I said get a 3G lappy card Sorry, should've said they don't support ŁG yet on XDA devices.

3G devices have a little catching up to do I'm afraid......

If TomTom/SatNav is your PRIMARY need, then XDA2 variant all the way

Presumably work would pay for your 3G card? And it then sits in the lappy so no extra hardware as such to fill your pockets with

work would EVENTUALLY pay for 3G card (altho at my level i'd probably only get GPRS ) but its taken my boss 6 months to buy me a laptop, and he still hasnt ordered one (i'm using a "borrowed" one :P ) considering i'm a mobile engineer i findit all quite ammusing

Jimbo, had something similar when they asked me to develop some mobile apps for the Icrap (they'd already ordered them prior to my involvement on the project, else the mobile guys WOULD be using XDA2's )

I said where's my Icrap then?

"What do you need one for?"

Oh the pain

Needless to say they got me one the next day Would you like some tips for dealing with non-technical bosses?

Sunny, I'm sure you assisted me in my choice of phone/PDA somewhere along the line
