Default Stripping and painting a block

My god, the satisfaction is immense! Its got to be the only part of an engine you can clean up, give a lick of enamle, and have it looking like brand new!

Been cleaning and painting mine all day today since i picked it up My mates think i'm a sad bastard though

Picture doesn't do it justice at all, flash makes things look wierd. Thats all dry by the way, its shiney cos its gloss enamel

If your stressed, bored, or need a lift, then i suggest doing this, its bloody excellent

ROFL, for the moment, until its MOT'd and the new system is measured and fitted, YEAH , the neighbours complained about the noised from just the downpipe being on, so had to chop an old RST system down and easiest thing was to side exit it , sounds pretty cool being such a short system

dont worry, the cars only in "messing" stage at the moment, will be undergoing a full stripdown, rebuild, sandblast, powdercoat parts and a full respray over winter

just something for a laugh at trackdays at the mo

next year should be fun

Top one is looking sweet I'm not gonna be a total bufty, i'm a vauxhall man see, and we like them dirty (cos we got no choice but have at least 6 simultanious oil leaks on the go )

But she will be clean The manifold got cut today by yours truely with a 9" makita angle grinder

The result is somewhat disatisfactory

oppsie Still salvageable, it will have to be cut dead straight, closer towards the head and the custom plenum chamber will have to be made to compensate for the way the injectors lean backwards.

Freddy, im not being secretive, just lazy, i cant be fucked to type all the details, lol

Basically though its a 1380cc 276cam, all balanced etc, pretty much the ultimate spec for an A series if you still want it reliable for tens of thousands of miles.

Its not mega power or anything, although could have made it so if i wished, would have cost no more, but wouldnt have been as tractable at low rpm or lasted as long.

150 @ front wheels @10psi currently runs 15 psi

you gotta have a big cooler on an a series turbo as well as a proper turbo head from avonbar mines stg 5 without the head you can only run about 8psi safely defore det becomes a problem with head + cooler i can run up to 19-20

Freddy, about 2 grand in parts incudling boring of the block and skimming, and zero pence in labour for building, not to mention lots of satisfaction from knowing every single nut and bolt was all perfect cause i made sure of it myself, never trust anyone else to do anyting that matters i reckon!

Sadly there are very very few engine builders out there with both the capability and inclination to actually do the job to the standards that i require personally, most of them arent anything like fussy enough, for the simple reason it doesnt make economical sense to spend dozens of hours building an engine when you can throw it together in a few hours instead.

Oh, loads of replies

The inlet is just resting on the head for pics and so i can build up a mental image of how it will all fit together.

The reason i cut the manifold is a very good one, infact there are two.

1) The way iwant to mount the charger, it would have fouled the bottom of the inlet manifold, and it would have had to have been cut short, then plates welded over the holes cut.

fig 1a (hehe)

Now i dunno whos car this is, i beleive its a MK1 escort fitted with a supercharged C20XE. Top job of a motor, but then again, its not like he has space issues in a mk1 bay with the engine mounted longitudonally.

Where' he has cut there is spot on to be plated (which i beleive he did do). I would have gone for this option and cram the charger in underneath it. But i wasn't happy with that way as it would mean a pain in the arse to maintain the charger, would have meant relocating the ICV and also the throttle body would still be on the top, when i want it on the side (nearside) of the fabricated box i have in mind

Issue two is restrictions, to me, it doesn't look like the inlet track is equal lengh anymore, and also the inlet seems a bit too snakey and complicated. So i just thought 'why not make my own plenum? it would be far simpler to get a box fabricated to my spec and means i have a lot more space at the back of the engine, which is always handy for something

Anyway, this pic is shit, i know, but i'm just trying to get you to see how i see it. Basically the plenum chamber will be kind of like this concept, 5mm aluminium box with slopped edge to allow injectors and fuel rail to sit nice (still working on fixing fuel rail down) The inlet that i chopped up will be welded to a pre cut sheet of ali from the inside AND the outside and smoothed off, then the box will be bent and closed, then welded.

anyway, we'll see how it goes. Give me a month or two and it will start to look like something that will work (i hope)

P.S This white line indicates where the manifold will be cut (properly)

Just thought i would clear that up, as i'm sure a lot of you think i'm a bodger

I dont think that equal length is anywhere near as important as you make out on this particular application, but it wont do any harm, so carry on

Oh yeah i know that, at the end of the day the air is getting forced in, so it doesn't really matter. But, then again, why not? Might aswell

But the restriction issues worry me, not that i lose sleep or nothing lol just i don't want the charger working overtime and i want a nice direct route from charger to cylinders
