Starter motor could be flocked mate - try banging it with a hammer (the starter motor & not the car pmsl) & see if that sorts it

Put an extra earth strap on engine to chassis , or at least from starter, sometimes works .

I know it sounds stupid but make sure that the main connections to the starter are on tight.

Also make sure that the connections to the battery are on tight.

Paul, your probably getting brassed off with me saying this - but thats how I run mine Never had any problems doing it like that.

What cable are you running and is the engine & gearbox grounded properly ?

Can you measure the voltage on the starter to see what it drops to on cranking (or clicking)

To prove the starter is okay remove it and wire it up manually with some hefty jump leads see if it spins and the solonoid is working okay.

Right think I've sorted it... THINK!
I bought a new Red Top 40 tested all my earths, checked the wiring and a load of other things.
Finally followed NUTS RuS advise and took it off and tesed it with my power pack and the solinoid was poping out (hense the click) but it wasn't spinning So much for a fucking recon starter.
So where's the best place to get another Starter? do Ford bend you over for them?

Take it to somewhere like these for testing or repair, its where some motor factors and the trade would get theirs.

http://www.unit-exchange.co.uk/index.html

Dont know this place but I use a similar company local to me.

Put the earth on the body of the starter (I use the mounting lug bolt hole) and the +ive on the big +ive in, then bridge the +ive across to the small one that fires the solonoid.

Did you see smoke with those sparks ?

Right still at it!
Got another starter today, discovered some of the wiring was missing

Right I'm at the stage where as the wiring is sorted and tested, the starter is tested and working and so is the battery...phew!

When turning the the engine over it clicks and spins slightly, then stops, then spins slighty then stops and so on. Is this progress??

Stuck the battery on charge and will try again in the morning.

Any thing else I should be doing.

As an observation each time the the engine turns slighty the power wires move! is that right???

Hope im not too late - but those type of batterys only like a small trickle charge over a longish time period. Dont try and boost it - you will knacker it up.

Whip the plugs out - and then try spinning it over does it turn with ease ? If not then maybe you have an earthing problem on the engine or gearbox.
