hi all
any ideas would be great
my car has suddebly developed a really loud squeel
when your going along (between about 2,000 rpm and about 3500)
sounds like when a fan belt is slipping on a car, but Really high pitched
and sounds a Little bit metallic...
The noise also dissapears when the clutch is pressed...
any ideas?? clutch release bearing??
any ideas would be great!
thanks!

Front propshaft universal joint turned out to be the cause (engine end), take the engine splash guard off and give the front prop a wiggle, any movement and the bearings are fooked. It took me ages to find the cause as it almost sounded like an air leak.

Look here to see the dangers of running a fooked release bearing

think you might be onto something there
the car dont do it in neutral.
it ONLY does it when accerating. as soon as you let off the gas
it stops, OR as soon as you press the clutch it stops..
so i guess the load being transmitted thru the shaft might do it?
i will have a look tomorrow thanks mate!
MADMAC! thanks for your input too! it could well be realease bearing
but strange that it only does it in gear

Mine would only do it at light throttle whilst driving, drove me bananas
New UJ is easy enough to get hold of and not too hard a job to fit.
I had to drop the front ARB as well as the exhaust to enable access to the front prop. I used to have a very slight vibration during acceleration and that has totally gone after fitting new UJ

Eventually the clutch stopped releasing properly and it was a nightmare to get in any gear.

bang same sound at same time on mine
i even took the turbo off to check the exhaust wheel hadnt been catching the housing - was fine
im still not ruling out a blown inlet to head gasket or plenum cover gasket
