as ive found ya actually MAKE speakers for houses do ya also spec em for perfect sound and to match the amp ect too

i got a set of old B&W speakers that i love and also got a set of tanoys dont sound all that good but there triangle shape so can mount in the corners of me house

ive also got a pair of bose tiny cube speakers that are ment to have the subwoofer but i lost that ( dont fooking ask)

i know the setup is all over the place

what im asking is can you spec some cones/tweeters to either fit in the tanoy box's OR mark another set of speakers that are triangle shape to allow me to fit in the corners of me room and still allow me to use the bose cubes i got

the amp i got is a rotel 6 channel power amp and serperate preamp, the cd plater dont work anymore so im gonna have to get another and the tap player is actually a phillips DCC player ( has a motorised front so matchez the cambridge audio cd player

Ginge, sorry I only do the one type of loudspeaker, so I cant really help...........BUT if those Tannoys are the "GRF" model and in mint condition, they are very collectable (in the far east) and prob worth serious money - like more than your Cossie would sell for

I thought they may be the vintage Tannoy corner GRF's............
http://aca.gr/pop_kant.htm

They are worth 3DR Cossie type money (Ł 7 - 8 k)

But Steve, if you saw a pair at a car boot sale priced at Ł 20 you'd think "waste of money"........In reality, they are worth Ł 7 - 8 k for the pair - to the right buyer

Their not so ugly now, as you give the bloke Ł 20 and fold down the rear seats of the Es Cos to get them home

Why the money though Doug?

Are they really rare? Is it extra special sound? Or both?

What's the plate on the front?

It's a combination of both PLUS their efficiency (or sensitivity), thay are very efficient, so the GRF's will go quite loud with even a low power tube (valve) amp......and of course the very best sounding amps are valve amps, typically with only 8 - 12 watts per channel For these low power amps you need efficient loudspeakers that are not made nowdays (with a couple of modern exceptions)......GRF's are quoted at 98 dB for 1 watt of power.........Most of todays loudspeakers are a lot less efficient (nearer 88-90 dB).........Hi-Fi amps are a lot more powerfull now, so you can see how the GRF's fit into that niche market.

The plate on the front is crossover network adjustment It is a cone loudspeaker with a concentric mounted horn loaded HF unit (tweeter), that is phase aligned........Tannoy's drive units we're the first drive units with phase alignment built into the design.

Cool.

As little as I know, I do know that 98 is loads That's per watt per metre now - what was the imperial equivalent?

Actually, is those days (late 60's early 70's) it was quoted at 10 ft (= 3 metres) as that was the generally accepted ideal listining distance..........So, they are even more efficient than the figures suggest

Sound is an exponential decay with distance isn't it?

This has become an anorack thread.........sorry Ginge....
It's actually the phase delay that the ear is most sensetive to, and this is a "problem" with most bass/mid + tweeter combinations mounted on a flat baffle (the speaker box front panel), it can be corrected in the crossover design - but with only average results......so it's a compromise - like most things in speaker design.

By doing what Tannoy has designed i.e. mounting the tweeter concentricely (in the centre of the mass/mid driver) you create a "point source" device that the human ear is much more comfertable with.....

Trouble it is such a heavely patented design that only Tannoy can produce it

Actually, when I said "ear" I meant brain lol.

The ear is a passive device, brain is "active" and has trouble deciphering phase/time domain anolomies (spl).

pmsl @ anorak thread

The coolest thing I (think I) remember learning was how we locate a sound source by the phase difference from the 2 ears - works fine on lower frequencies, but on higher freq. the distance between your ears is too much (or wavelength too small)

That sound (excuse the pun ) about right?

Good thread this Doug - actually really interested in this stuff from my old competition car stereo days.

When you say you can correct the phase delay with crossover design - how exactly?

rich ya will never get perfect sound in car stereos

the guy who set upm my old stereo showed me his and he ahd CD's that he used to test the sound, he had some fooked up looking mono valve amps, they ahd the valves on show and have just a brown metal base, looking like a war time radio

i showed him my escort cabrio with 22 speakers in it and asked for his advice, hes face when he hear it was like a rabbit caught in a cars headlamps

he said theres no way to get it to sound the same then for 20 mins all i heard was
"blah blah blah blah, soft tops roof because it blah blha blah blah"

i just stood there and nodded think what does he know as it sounds the tits when im in the car and the headlamps dance with the music

I know mate, but you can get close.

In mine, I had time correction facilities to try and equal out the path lengths, but you're always limited by the space.

wasnt that bad, was all installed class i thought, had me kenwood eq in me ashtray hidden away, 6x9's in the rear quarters ,,,,,,,,,,, and the the rear shelf ( and ya cant hear em when the roofs down as it gets covered with the roof ),,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, also 6x9's in the front door cards in custom angled pods to ain the sound directly at you, 6 ins alpine DDC F17A speakers in the foot wheel and the tweeter where the manual wingmirror controls are usually found, 5 ins mids at the top of the door card, 4 ins in raised and covered in matching vinal in the rear door cards below the 6x9's jbl tweeters in the rollover hoop, 2 12ins pioneer subs in the boot, 2 kenwood bluecone 6x9's in the boot sides

cant remember the rest but thats roughly what it looked like

oh and my my harmon kardon tc600 amp powering the subs, rockford 2600x X2 powering the door and rear quarter 6x9's, 2 different alpine amps powering the other speakers and a kenwood mini amp powering the tweeters, there was also a kenwood 624 4 channel amp powering the 6.9's in the boot and the rear shelf

oh and 1 6x9 under each seat pointing at the rear seats so people in the rear couldnt stick there feet anywhere

was proper class i tell ya
