yep, this is a relaying problem mate, the SMTP often won't accept if you are not connected with the corresponding connection.
What solves this problem is to use the POP settings of the mail server you want to receive, and the SMTP settings of the ISP you are connected with. That does the trick
For instance : your mailbox is at Wanadoo, and you are connected with Tiscali.
use : pop.wanadoo.co.uk and smtp.tiscali.co.uk
and you're done

They should, however allow you to send an email from whoever@tiscali.co.uk with a reply address of whoever@demon.co.uk.

nope Frog, it will work, trust me
SMTP servers don't check sender address. Proof is that you can perfectly send a mail with an inexisting e-mail address, as long as you use the SMTP of the ISP you are connected with

the outgoing SMTP address is correct, just checked it on demon's web site.
Not sure if your username/password will work though, you are effectively connecting to two different servers (your wsrc and demon) with the same username.
I can't remember if smtp requires you to logon (probably not), but if it does, you will need to be able to supply your demon username (account name) as part of your setup.
This could be where your problem is.

Kind of, but if you change it, then chances are you won't be getting your mail from wrsoc, cos that requires login information too.
Is there anything behind the "more settings" button ?

imho RING THE SUPPORT DESK, demon's one is actually staffed by semi-competent people and they can tell you either way.

My outlook express has a "my outgoing mail server requires authentication" check box, it's not the same version as yours, but there must be somewhere in there where you can specify a username for each mail server (incoming and outgoing).

Now, both SMTP & Incoming mail servers are mail.wsrsoc.co.uk
The test email works now, so must be doing something right?
But when I actually send an email for real I get it back saying:
our message did not reach some or all of the intended recipients.
Subject: helloooooooo
Sent: 16/06/2005 21:41
The following recipient(s) could not be reached:
'*******@hotmail.co.uk' on 16/06/2005 21:41
554 <*******@hotmail.co.uk>: Relay access denied
