I went in a Lotus Carlton about a year ago, when I went to buy some wheels off a guy near J10 of the M4. I turned up in my crappy old ren 19 16v, to collect 3 Rondells, got chatting to the guy about cars as he used to have a cossie, then he says, hey, come an have a look at this... So he opens his garage, and there are TWO Lotus Carltons sat there Turns out this guy who is 23, got made redundant from a well paid computer job, so he spunks his pay-off on a perfect one and a crash damaged one(which cost him peanuts!) and he'd done it up so well that you couldn't tell the difference, only thing giving it away was the tiniest bit of overspray on his front wheel-arch
So being a cheeky fook , I asked if he wouldn't mind taking me for a blast , he says no probs but it has got to be a quick one cos hes meeting his bird . So he drives really carefully for about 5 mins, an i'm thinking "hes gonna drive it like a granny ", when we get to a T'junction, and he just wallops the clutch out at 5000 rpm and launches sideways out the road 2-3-4-5 getttin close to 120, go past a saxo like its going backwards, anchors on for a roundabout, down to 2nd, sideways all the way round and back the same way we came, smoke everywhere fair play, it would take a well tuned cossie to show it a clean pair of heels, I recon anything less than a T34 high end stg 3 would be severly embarrased by it, They are lovelly motors, and I think they looks awsome, but when the guy told me he just paid Ł1200 JUST IN PARTS to do the timing-chain, it sort of put me off a bit Still fuckin awsome though

The muppet that won that couldn't drive properly & smashed it into a piano shop a short time after getting his hands on it!
Project RS Kicker looked ok back in the day but if you were to do that these days you'd be beaten & laughed at!

that car was won by a guy in Rochdale and promptly crashed through a kebab shop 3 days later
My mate still has both of the bonnet vents in minging yellow as his m8 owns the breakers it was scrapped at.
Sad loss.

He also broke a Carlton.
The accident damaged one is a mint repair, only some slight marks to the underside of the trans tunnel give it away, I MOT'd both of them!

The power delivery from the Lotus Carlton is effortless cos of the twin turbo's. Having 377 bhp and over 400 ft/lbs of torque. Says on the video from Top Gear, that Vauxhall were embarrased by its power figures and were encouraged to not mention the top speed when selling it back in 1990, 175 mph - was equivalent to a Ferrari Testarossa in speed for half the price at Ł48,000. The cops had got 3.0 ltr Senetors at the time which could do 149 mph, and they sell the public a weapon like the Lotus Carlton, Fair play Vauxhall. Held the fastest production saloon car, for over 10 years, until now I think the Bentley Arnarge R holds the record, with over 450 bhp, but can do 168 mph, do dont see why its Top ?? Fuck Knows !!
Very good performance figure, especially when the car weighs in at over 1700 kgs and 30 - 70 through the gears at just 3.8 seconds !!
Proper tool

Almost bought an ex-cop car 3.0 Senator 24v with 5spd!! Almost fell over that it wasn't an automatic. Decided against it since insurance was costly and it was a bit rusty...but for 700 quid.....
So I bought a Pug 309 1.4 instead

I have always adored the Lotus carlton. I rmemeber once one of these having it out with an RS500 and he totally left it for dust. Standard was 377bhp but for Ł800 u can get it chipped to 500bhp.
Absolutely awesome car. I also happen to know James Waddington and on a full tank u only get about 125 miles out of them!!!!!!!!! Top top car, but parts hugely scarce now.

whos the guy who owns the lotus carlton website who lives in witham, when i went to the first rolling road day at paul hills we stopped and he came over and said he owned a carlton, turned out to be the guy who owns the site, his dad owns 1 too i belive
he also owned a breaker for his one should he need parts for his ( breaker was a opel jobby though)
fooking top cars, think a guy in work his uncle is selling his for 15grand
he claims at 90moh in 6th its only reving to grand, ment to have real tall gears ( dont quote me on that as people do add and takeaway on power figures and speeds on cars )
id still have one

DEYTUKURJERBS
Theres a modded one round here, all know its got is a aftermarket exhaust but ive seen him boot out of a junction and leave 2 massive black lines for about 200m up the road with what didnt seem much effort so its prob even more modded.
Awesome as a std car, but 377bhp and 1660kg isnt gona feel MEGA fast, and not exactly easy/cheap to mod.
Love em, but il stick with moddable cars

Wonder why Lotus went for a chargecooler over an intercooler? Lack of space perhaps or in this case a charge cooler is a better option than an intercooler....
