what u got i think is sections of steel inpregnated with oil over the years. steel is porous & will hold old oil in it rather like a sponge. u need to clean these areas thoroughly with a degreaser & let dry. will probably take a few attempts to shift it depebding on the age of the car. hope this helps

mates dad has been doing the same work on the underside of a mk 2 escort. used a small blow torch (taymar type ) & a chisel & scraped the lot off. takes ages. dont use too much heat to redden metal, just enough to melt the black crap & make it easier to scrape off. what sort of motor is it? & what age?

its a j reg nissan pulsar gtir and it has been took back to bare shell.its had a colour change full quaife box built for it etc and is getting fully rebuilt engine, diffs etc
the under side is the only place i was going to leave but now decided i might as well do it seeing as the rest of the car will be factory fresh.
i remember seeing the blck gritty stuff somewhere before.looed like a cheap version of waxoyl.

sounds like stuff we used to use called tetroysyl, was a gritty crap u brushed on after repairs. not worth the full of yer arse with roasted snow. a little heat should shift it

u need to remove all the underseal from everywhere. Clean the underside so u can eat ur dinner off it. Then before you paint you need to wipe it down a few times with pre paint(panel wipe).
