Default How to make a 3 Port Oil Breather - step by step guide

now, following on from my recent topics of how to scarily install nice things to your car, i thought i'd do a "how to" topic.

As nearly all of you know, i hate shiney things on my car - i just don't like the polishing factor

so i've been wanting an oil seperator/breather now for a while, and i don't want a shiney one and can't justify paying 100+ odd quid for one. so i been a busy little bugger and made one.

Heres how i did it.

1) Buy materials - this little lot cost me £10 from the local steel stock holders.

2) Cut out of the plate an endcap for your tank - my tank is 3" wide, approximately 7" tall and is approximately 1 pint in volume. Also, choose the size of your tank here - and at the bottom, make it slightly angled for the oil drain pipe later

3) Weld up the end cap to the tank and then check that its water tight by filling with water.

4) cut out another piece of plate and make the other end tank - drill 2 holes in this - one for the breather pipe from the crank-case breather, and the other as a guide for the oil drainpipe.

Then weld the breather pipe for the crankcase into the bottom tank cap - making sure that there is at least 2-3" of pipe going into the tank as we don't want any oil going back down here.

5) then at the top of the tank, mark out where you want the camcover breather pipe and the atmosphere vent pipe to sit - these can be ahywhere you choose, providing they are at the top.

6) using a stipidly large drill (in this case, 20mm) make some holes where you have marked.

7) Weld on the pipe fittings you are going to be using - personally, i am using silicone hose and therefore just welded on some tube.

8) Weld on the bottom tank cap making sure the orientation is correct so that the breather is where you want it, and the oil drain is at the bottom corner of the angled bottom plate for the tank.

that should give you something that looks like this:

9) Grind flat all the excess material and check for any perforations in your welding here as we don't want any leaks and then fit a mounting bracket for wherever you are going to be mounting it.

10) Spray whatever colour you want and admire your handywork - mine is in primer here, but will be in smokestone blue to match the car once finished.

Total time - 2 hours 15 mins.

Total enjoyment and satisfaction - lots

Total Saved - £plenty

Comin soon, i will demonstrate how to make an oil catch tank so that your drained oil does not leak onto your engine and driveway
