Default Question about Dyno'ing an engine

Right you Dyno an engine when its new!? But how do you get around the proble of needing to run it in etc????

Also what are the advantages to Dyno'ing an engine compared to tuning it when its in the car??

The dyno has a run in program, so you can put the engine on and leave it for a few hours and it simulates various loads etc.

Also with an engine dyno, you are only loading it for a few seconds each time (in fact only long enough to capture the data).

You should ALWAYS do BOTH to ensure the engine is perfect as the car is a different environment to the dyno cell and may need tweeking.

This is my running in procedure... it worked last time and I'm going to use it again on the new engine. Its pretty stress free (for me )

1. Lay in bed whilst Martoon struggles with his hangover from the obligatory pre-dyno piss up
2. Get up around 12, avoid food and general devastation on hotel room floor.Check out and pay the horrible bar bill from night before and pop down road to Harveys.
3. Find engine on Dyno and going through the runing in cycle.
4. Pop to garage to get headache pills and lucozade and general garage junk food.
5. chew fingers off stressing whilst engine screams its nuts off on dyno (pausing to jump through ceiling if boost pipes blow off)
6. Leave happy and watch whilst Martin takes engine off dyno.
7. Once new engine is fitted, Send Tigger off to Wales to see his parents then send him upto Stu and kenny in Blackpool.
8. Enjoy run in and live mapped car.

I am upto step 7 again on new engine... just need to talk to Tigger again

@ Porkie. Man cant fault that seems like the only way to get an engine done lol

So how long does the running in programme take??? as does it simulate over a certain amount of mileage?

Mike,

Where did you get that figure??

I always believed that if the rings did not seat within the first hour or two, they were not going to.

Break it in like it is going to live, change the oil to fully synthetic, and stand on the LOUD pedal

Mine was dynoed and it had to be run in for a recommended 800 to 1000 miles, but it is still getting better even though it now has 2500 miles on it.

The power/torque band is perfect when they are dynoed.

When we run in a ship engine after overhaul, we run it in over 24ish hours.

20 mins on zero load.
Have a look inside
1 hour on zero load
Have another look inside
2 hours on 10% load
4 hours on 20% load
6 hours on 50% load
Have a look inside
12 hours on 75% load
Have a look inside
1 hour on 100% load
last check over
back on line. What a c'nt of a job! It also take 2 weeks to overhaul the b@stard!
