here we go mate.
He needs to open that drawing/xref (going through the xref manager, click on
drawing and click open) and then find out what layer it is on in that
drawing..then come back to his drawing and look through the list of layers
and find the one called 'what ever the name of drawing is' plus 'layer
name'...if this doesn't work it could get really complicated..are you sure
its not a block?

top chap alex..
doing ok so far. Just in microstation you have numbers 1-46 i think.. put stuff on each individual number/layer. But in acad you have layers, and im not sure what layer/level stuff goes on, and how to change the layer
so what i done, im using someones elses drawing, so that the elec symbols are already on the drawing, changes the background and just moviing / copying the elec stuff to new positions, if ya get me

something like that
go to your main layers screen....
select new and name it 'DADO'
select your linetype form the millions of line types avaiable....if you do not have these (which you should) download an extra linetype pack off the net. Then selct the line weight!!! from thin to hefty!!
you can then turn this layer off, etc OR when using viewports, FREEZE & THAW the layer, so that different viewports are showing two of the same drawing but may have different layers!!!

at the moment, I am taking all DYNAMIC blocks from my drawing and setting parameters and actions for the next person to use it easily....
which means....to manipulate a block (change length, etc, etc) you have to explode it...which is shit....SO, block management and setting these parameters allow the block to be changed in these ways only, and still keeping it to a block, so you don't have to keep turning into a block after explding each time!!!!
easy!!!

2006 rocks!! Rivit 8 is even better though
You want CAD blocks or "Smart blocks" as they are now known in 2006 for cable trays etc. You can makr your own or the ones that come with the package.
