How to fix a stripped thread
any ideas guys? i stripped one of the threads where my turbo elbow (cold side) bolts to the turbo. i'm pissed off now
it will go finger tight but as soon as you try anymore, it goes loose again. its the bottom one of the 3. i was going to try and bit a thinner bolt through and chuck a nut on the end but there isn't enough space behind for me to get a nut on. i've tried a slightly longer bolt hopeing that it'll find some good thread thurther down but it didn't.
someone suggested helicoil but the kits are expensive and i can't afford one at the moment. how much would a garage charge to do one?
if not, any other good bodges?

You drill out the thread completely. Make a step on the edge. Cut a slightly larger thread into the hole. WInd in an insert which will expand and grip the new thread. You put the original fixing into the new thread the insert provides.

Look abit harder you can get them much cheaper than that!
You basically re-tap the origional thread slightly bigger then insert the helicoil which brings the thread back to the origional size & it's much stronger than the origional thread!

it all sounds easy, but not the cutting a step bit. how would i do that?
its alloy, not cast. its the cold side of my turbo. how much would a garage typically charge for helicoil?

You can get a complete kit for Ł22 which includes 10 thread inserts (assuming M8 thread)
http://www.threadedinserts.net/
Easy to fit, if the old thread is stripped you will not have to do any drilling, just tap out the hole with the tap supplied in the kit and fit the insert

Shows the process. Its not difficult, but I can understand your reluctance to do it. Decent technician will charge a score or so.

just slap a bit of chemical metal in the whole and tighten it finger tight before it hardens , then when it hardens nip it a bit, i did that on my throttle cable bracket when the thread stripped and it worked perfect, never came undone or anything

funny you should mention that. someone on another forum suggested i put a thin layer of grease on the bolt, then put chemical metal ontop of that. then it'd set just on the turbo and not the nut so it can be removed, tightened up more, etc.
i was thinking of doing that as its cheaper than helicoiling and i'm skint. a performace car on the dole is gay. i want a 1.1 Mk3 Fiesta

you can try hitting the bolt with a hammer (opposite end to the head) to flatten the thread down to make it slightly wider and try screwing it back in the hole

Gaz, i don't fully understand what you mean mate?
the only thing i have to loose with chemical metal is if it sticks to the bolt and if the elbow needs to come off again, the bolt will probably snap.
that said, if and when that happens i may have a job and i'll do it properly

true @ chem metal...... you could fill teh hole with chem metal, then re-drill and tap the hole to the original size....should be cheaper than helicoil.....
