i have decided that i want out of the DWP and i want to go for the fire service.
i wanted to join when i finished my a-levels. it was arounf the time of the strikes so there was no chance of getting recruited.
im getting really fooked of working here so i have decided that the only way i will be happy is if i go for the fire service.

Does any1 have any advice or information about joining up?

i dont think there is anywhere near me recruiting, is their anyway to find out when the next one recruitment could be?

any other info regarding the fore service would be great.

I tried for 4 years to get in without any luck. Its apparently a very sought after position. In my time of applying, the process changed several times. Its best if you just check with your local county as to how to apply. I ended up applying to london, kent, herts, middlesex and hampshire, just in an effort to get my foot in the door. Reckon if i was a one armed lesbo who didnt speak english, i'd have been in by now. but dont let my bitterness put you off Im sure its a great job, and given the opportunity, i'd still jump at the chance to join.

im in the middle of applying at the moment - 25 jobs available in my area, 1000 people applying

went a couple of years ago and got through all the tests and even passed the interview (hardest bit) but got on the waiting list only for the pay dispute to put an end to that....
so back to the beginning again

yep, they are the kind of stats i was looking at as well. Apparently at the time of my applications, all those elidgible were stuck on a computer and 200 of the 3000 applications were shortlisted for 20 or so jobs. I was never one of the lucky ones

Me!(and "Dannfire" off here is aswell ) Best job in the world, ever, I wouldn't swap it for anything.I was very lucky and got in first time, may of been down to being ex forces,or just luck, but what DaveyBoy says is true, One armed Lesbians do stand a better chance of getting in, that's how things work I'm afraid.
A big tip I can give ya is to not put down anything for sexual preference, (as in straight,gay or Bi) as alot of brigades are trying to recruit a more diverse workforce.You're not lying, just telling them what they want to hear.
I have a mate from Limeric Fire and Rescue service, who, at the age of 42 has got in 2 years ago, after trying every year for 12 years!It's too late now to try for the Hants,Berks,Surrey,Bucks recruitment drive as I'm sure they've all closed down the phone lines just last week, but try your local station, just go there and ask em.(they may also be able to help you practise hose running for the selection days)
There are also lots of works/private brigades at power stations, fuel refinaries, airports etc, now some of them are very boring and do nowt, but others do alot of local area shouts aswell, I went to an AirBase station the other day and it was the nicest station I've ever been to, proper homely. (it needs to be as you can spend alot of time sat around doing nothing, or washing ya car, building a head, rubbing down bodywork, paying ya bills,playing volleyball, gym work etc, ohh, it's a hard life, the worst that can happen is you get a shout! )
If ya get through the selection process then the basic training is very hard, I did mine with Lancashire Fire and Rescue who absolutly hammer you for 13 weeks, room inspections, parades, loads of PT, it's just like Army basic training, but with hoses.You just gotta think of what's waiting for ya at the end.As soon as I came back from my basic traing I volunteered to do an Ambulance Technician course aswell, so I'm quite clued up on the med side of things too.
Good luck buddy, keep applying if ya don't get in the first time, although there are some pretty bad things to see out there, the good outwieghs the bad.I've just done my EFAD (Blue lights course) and that was one of the most awesome things ever, You find me anyone on here who wouldn't wanna go flying through a town centre at rush hour in a 13 tonne Fire Appliance!
Go for it, as you can tell, I love it

sound exaclty like what i expect. i dont expect to get in first time and i realise their are some bad sights but i can handle stuff like that i seen stuff before.

cheers andy for that cracking advice. im going to go to the local fire station later on after work and see if the can help me out with my recruitment and give me some more advice and stuff.

a load of my m8s just went in for it & all but 1 got knocked back! the other 1 still aint heard back yet!

As if I've ever done that before! It's wierd, when I've got Firekit on I feel like the best looking bloke in the world!It's as though I wanna do a calender shoot or something! yeh, it does boost ya mojo up a bit, we had a christmas do a few years ago at a big hotel, loads of other parties there, word got around the other groups that we were firefighters, hundreds of drunken women(with there partners) were all after us, it was amazing, and I'm married! and another time, at bandcamp a load of my mates(who weren't firemen, but most of my mates are) were trying to chat up these two twin sisters, not a chance, I didn't even try as they were way to fit for me, my mate told them I was a fireman, that was it, they were straight over on the search for "hose!"I'll stop now before I get in trouble.

Never really got on whith contacts Anna! they dont do throw away jobbies for em! or @ leats they didnt! whihc meant i had to have the hard 1s & they were sooooooo uncomfortable!
