Default injector replaced ....and back all shiny from main dealer...

Gor a misfire in cylinder 3 in my V8 merc....I'm changing all the sparkplugs as they've not been changed for 4 and a half years and 27000 miles.... (Mercedes recommend 4 years or
45000 miles) If its an individual coil pack that's faulty should all 8 be changed at the same time or can I just change the single faulty one.....?

Nothing stopping you just replacing the faulty one, on my Golf i had no3 go then a few weeks later another 2 misfire codes came up so i just repalced all of them.

Not as pricey as all 8 tho!

Just the Faulty one just now then until all this coronavirus blows over and I'm back to work.. Then I'll do them all... Delphi coil packs can be had for £35 each from ECP using a discount code so not to bad...not sure whats fitted as standard but NGK supply the sparkplugs from new....ill look in to that.....

Yea as above fuzzy, it is a trend that once one goes they will all go at around the same time, you may be lucky and it’s just a one off.

try not to drive on it as you’ll be pumping petrol into the cats, that’s unless you disconnect the injector on that cylinder.

I did drive it a few of times as it was only idling rough but seemed to be running ok on load, it was booked into the merc specialist but lock down put a stop to that. there was no engine warning lights lit up but im not using it now until I get it sorted as the orange engine light came on at the weekend intermittently .
NGK coil packs are only £50 or so each so still not to deadly a repair bill....I can do the plugs and coil packs myself as access is good so no specialist labour costs just the 600 or so for the coils and plugs ....

are Delphi parts decent for the coilpacks ? or go for NGK to match the OE sparkplugs?

I'd be wanting an OEM coilpack.

Aftermarkets of any brand are rarely as good.

not sure who makes the oem part...NGK make the original sparkplugs....ill need to remove one to see whats on it but Mercedes has surprised me a few times with how cheap main dealer parts are so I will probably fit a single ECP coil if required just now but replace them all with main dealer once everythings back to normal....

Doesnt matter who makes them. The Mercedes part will be better than the aftermarket one, even if it appears to be same manufacturer. Why that is is a mystery.

Some cars it wont matter, some cars are very fussy. But absolutely always worth checking dealer prices, sometimes they're surprisingly low....of course other times they're surprisingly high lol

NGK or DELPHI should work as a stop gap.

I’m amazed you don’t have any kind of engine management warning though, you certain it’s a coil pack?

probably don’t notice it as much higher up the Rev range as the other 7 cylinders are helping balance it out 🤣

not at first....was just idling lumpy....it has the orange engine management light on now though....apparently its a common problem,,,,usually a spark plug....coil or injector....
plugs have been in it nearly 5 years ...that's the maximum recommended lifespan …..

It won't fuel a cylinder that has a recognised missfire. Cylinder recognition will shut it off.

OEM coils will be more than adequate. Modern coils are extremely powerful.

Less so chinese copies

👍 I’m only going off my knowledge of VAG 1.8t’s as they are/where common for it and they wouldn’t shut the injector down even if the ecu detected the misfire, I can’t remember if that ecu detected which cylinder though to be fair or it was just a genetic misfire fault.

Most modern cars will specify which cylinder it believes there is a misfire on. I think almost in last 15+ years or so ? Doesnt mean the OBD always gets it right though

Well that was about the last run of 1.8t’s at 15 years ago, but just having a quick look I think the post 2000 cars got cylinder recognition.

They would still keep the injector live as I had a 54 plate Leon cupra do it to me.

ok so I swapped existing coil packs and spark plugs over and still miss fire on cylinder 3 so its not spark plugs or coil packs . I swapped 2 and 3 over and also 6 and 7 incase I had the wrong cylinder numbers ….anyone got a suggestion for plan C ….?

an injector sticking on a car that sits unused 5 days every week?

a thought just came back to me....when I bought the car and got it checked over by a merc specialist....they listed the battery as needing replaced although ive had no problems with dim lights or slow cranking over .ive just came across an article online saying an under performing battery can trigger faults.....anyone experienced that sort of thing? is that right?

Firstly...how are you determining there is a misfire in cyl 3 ?

Scantool or other ?

another c63 on youtube had same fault code....problem was a dripping injector filling chamber with fuel.... the spark plug was soaked in fuel when I removed it ….is an injector an easy thing to change or is there some setting up involved?

mates obd2 reader, most likely a relatively cheap eurocarparts fault reader...
I swapped cylinder 2s spark plug and coil pack over with cylinder 3 , reset code reader but get same fault code up for cylinder 3 misfire...

I wouldnt trust a generic OBD reader both with codes and ability to clear any codes.

Before going nuts spending money, you'd need to find a proper scanner, and also learn how the ecu actually determines a misfire. Whether crank speed, via a coil, or some other method as that can give a clue as to why or whether it may be spurious.

But swapping coils etc...well...if you cant actually clear the codes to start again...If you try and clear them, how long is it before a code returns ? And under what circumstances does it happen ?

a few seconds after start up and idling with light revs the code reappears....sometimes the engine management light comes on on the dash sometimes it doesn't... its not my game so its maybe something I should just leave for the specialist then after lockdown ends....

tomorrow since im not doing anything ill swap injector positions and see if the fault moves to ta different cylinder .

doesn't seem to be any manufacturers name on the code reader....AUTOP is on the case....almost certainly a cheap eurocarparts item but I also borrowed a neighbours different code reader last week that threw up the same misfire in cylinder 3 code plus the spark plug was wet with fuel when removed ...

some internet researching shows injectors are recommended changed between 70000 - 80000 miles....mine has done 85000.....

£542 for 8 new injectors from local Mercedes main dealer....that's quite reasonable ….and they're still open just now

fuck it....specialist is closed and im to impatient to wait until lockdown ends so ive just booked it into the local Mercedes main dealer Monday morning....its to high performance a car for a diy spanner monkey like me to be mucking about with it... it only gets main dealer parts fitted anyway so the only difference is 40% more hourly rate charge....itll get the best of treatment and ill probably be 2 grand lighter by Friday

Why would you disconnect it when you're saying there's only an intermittent misfire ? You haven't said it is actually off a cylinder ?

I've no idea.... It idles lumpy and it says misfire in cylinder 3....id assume its flooded the combustion chamber and the plug isn't firing at all as it was soaking wet with petrol when I took it out ..
It was mentioned earlier about not running it as it'll be pumping fuel into the cats....

Ahh right....a misfire to me is just that. Totally off a cylinder is a not fire at all lol.

Odd that it is totally wet though, would nearly suggest an injector issue or wiring relating to that injector.

Modern cars really dont use a load of fuel so would think it take a fair while to actually soak a non firing plug.

I assume you have changed the plugs, and/or checked for spark ?

I swapped sparkplugs and the coilpacks from another cylinder and its still saying misfire on the same cylinder 3....aparentky the injectors can stick... Mercedes will get to the bottom of it at my great expense...

The independent specialist I use is 65 an hour but is closed just now .. The dealer is 120 but open... If its an injector they'll change them all and the spark plugs in a couple of hours... Fortunately I just got a 3500 tax rebate as I don't think I could afford it on universal credit....
Once again though the main dealer parts are cheaper than online.... 67 an injector... It varies from 80 to 120 online....

I’ve already said, if it was me I’d just pull the plug on that injector, it’s not firing anyway so it just saves the possibility of wrecking your cats.

yes ill probably do that before I drive it down....I assume the main dealer will have the best of the best diagnostics that will be able to pin point the problem more accurately that a 20 quid code reader from eurocarparts….I don't want to be throwing money at them changing parts for it to turn out they weren't the problem !

The problem with dealers....is usually the extent of their work is servicing and washing cars. Now there are some exceptions, and there may me some very tach savvy people in them...but they are an exceptional rarity. Because with new cars...often they dont need a huge pile under warranty.
And when they do need something big, it's usually a case of remove old and fit a new part, rather than any actual intelligent or skilled work nevermind actual diagnostic work.
Which sadly for most is plugging in a computer and if it doesnt give a pinpoint answer ( which few ever do, or can do ), then they're stumped.

id like to get it sorted asap while were off work so itll get the Mercedes diagnostic check on Monday for 99 quid.....hopefully that's productive. their master tech told me the other day that hes done a few of these older c63s with the same symptoms and its been a sticky injector....if the diagnostics isn't very conclusive ill just need to take it back and wait until my local independent specialist reopens as theyre quite good and think a bit more out of the box than just reading what a screens telling them....

if it's a common problem, that's a good start. Really best thing to do is just remove and have the injectors tested....but at £67 for a new one, isnt even worth hardly bothering testing. Just replace.

Or you could try swapping the injector to another cylinder ( assuming it is a normal injection car ) and see if the problem moves.

one plus of the main dealer is I got a new Mercedes C200 as a courtesy car....gutless, but then its never going to match a C63.....but my 10 year old C class feels firmer , sharper and more solid on the road than this brand new one..and my old one running on 7 cylinders is still more fun than this .
just checked online....apparently its a 1.5 petrol/electric.....
the cockpit has to many buttons...theres buttons and switches everywhere...totally unnecessary .
at least its better than the most basic fiat 500 my mate got when he took his audi s5 in to be fixed...
