Quick on as I can not explicitly find anywhere that says the now £86 genuine ford pink relay or even a still steeply priced £39 fuel pump relay from Euro car parts be substituted for a generic 5 pin two throw relay from a an auto electrics store for a fiver?

even £39 seems mad for a relay to me? Obviously when fault finding the Pink relay is the one to have but if it doesn’t fix my issue I know I can just send it back through eBay rules / distance selling act etc but really don’t like to do that sort of thing

just wondering what makes the pink one so special does it’s larger size indicate it does something a generic 5 pin two throw doesn’t do specific to the ford system

Is the one you’ve got knackered? If so open it up and see what’s inside, I’d be dubious of the current capacity of a cheap relay though.

edit: I bought a spurious relay for a zafira gsi from GSF once and iirc it didn’t last 6 months before it burnt out, put a used one in and was fine 👍

Pretty sure the genuine pink relay has a timer circuit inside.

Mine is suspicious, it’s had a no power to pump fault for 10+ years

the pink relay has no continuity between any pin which is odd you’d think something would have continuity, but that’s as far as I have looked into it as it was late

it’s been run with a car battery behind the back seat for as I say 10 years at least. Found a box with 3 burnt out fuel pumps in it too haha

In the event of a stall (or crash where the engine dies) the relay will stop running the pump - so its for safety. A normal 5 pin relay will run the pump indefinitely with ignition on so could pump fuel all over your engine bay if you were to crash and split a line. Dramatic i know, but thats its purpose.

These take 2 seconds to repair usually - its almost always dry solder joints. And if it has proper melted/burnt out, then you need to renew the wiring to it, and to the pump, as it will only happen again (5 pin generic or new proper relay)
