Did anyone see last weeks 5th gear episode when Jason Plato was racing a small turbo escos and a mk8 fiesta st 3cyl round a frack..the fiesta was about 3 sec quicker.
Just goes to show how technology has come on.

That’s probably tyre technology on its own

Not sure, from what I read it’s from fords heritage collection and has really low miles so quite possibly has the original shite from the 90’s

I would still rather have the escort cossie. I do like these fiestas though. Dont the engines go onto 2 cylinders when they are just pottering around round??

there's a lot to be said about cars in general being so much faster now than back in the day, and you'd have put your money on the lighter car with more power being faster than the slower, heavier, less powerful car, because maths right?
but you also have to take into account that there's probably 40 years of chassis development between the 2 cars and that the escos was a heritage car that wouldn't have been spanked around the track AND that the fiesta had the performance pack
so even a remap on a daily driver escos would make it much quicker
but it's the chassis that's the biggest thing

I'd still have the Cossie any day. Was hoping it was gonna be faster than the Fiesta but was really surprised at how much slower it was, but as has been said I guess that's progress.

Also did you see that bit where that Jimmy deville about making an exhaust for that mini. Then he said the car had also been remapped to make the power. So without the remap how much difference would the exhaust of made.

Yeah what a load of crap. Without the remap there would've been virtually no difference.

The bit with the fiesta and the escort was good with Plato driving. I’ve not driven the new one but recently had a 2014 ST180 and I recon it would be as quick or quicker than an Escort round Anglesey in the dry.
But who would have an Escort Cassie on standard boost now? Nobody. And if it had old tyres then it would add 2 or 3 seconds to the lap time vs.new Michelin’s on the Fiesta.

On paper the Escort should probably destroy the Fiesta...so it'd probably take a pretty big leap to actually beat it.
Although it is noted they complained about the lag...wonder how a small turbo Escort would fair. No doubt fast spool, torque, wide power band all also help the Fiesta than the headline number.

Some older tyres did seem made better than todays stuff. Although if true, modern rubber may well have made a difference.
Lots of variables either way, but the bottom line is still the same. Car/chassis overall technology does make the modern stuff faster and undoubtedly safer for any given power, and likewise braking probably a lot better.
Something like a 100-0 test would have been interesting too.
