Hi all,

i have been offered a escort cosworth and i am very interested in the car.

before I buy I want to make sure it’s a real escort Cosworth shell. it’s a M reg small turbo version I’ve done the usual HPI checks and all comes back clear.

Not being a Cosworth buff I want to know whether there are certain things on the body that are unique to year and also the Cosworth shell. I was thinking of items such as chassis numbers stamped a certain way, petrol cap, mirrors and/or additional strengthens.

Also, can anyone shed some light on the correct chassis numbers for that year and model?

i just don’t want to buy a rs2000 shell on a Cosworth log book and find out later.

Any help would be appreciated.

shells are completely different so it shouldn't confuse the situation.first of all the tunnel for the gearbox .the front wings,rear wings ,inner wings ,floors .they share a roof skin and boot with the rs2000 .it should have a flap on the petrol cap being the small turbo m reg.mirrors are interchaneable with the earlier big turbo and is a preference thing so some people change them over.chasis number is stamped as every ford is

It’s currently not running the 4x4 system so I guess I need to have a good look at the tunnel.

I need to check the petrol flap but I think it has a cap rather than a flap

i suppose there could be some crossover cars with the cap instead of the flap

It it’s 2WD at the moment but the front hubs and cross members are all correct for the 4x4 system. Not checked the tunnel yet

the tunnel will be fine .they just change the gearbox crossmember to fit the t5 2wd box.just be wary if you change it back to 4wd that you have the same ratios in the front and back diff.i think the prop is different in a 2wd converted car also

So how do you tell if it’s a motorsport shell over the road going version ?

Has it got a petrol locking cap or has it got a flap. The small turbo escort cossies have a flap. Also they have different door mirrors.

there are motorsport road-going versions, but I'm not sure if they were offered that late in production.

mine is a motorsport one but would have been a k reg

I always thought it was just the small turbo escos that had the different door mirrors and flap.
