The mind boggles at some peoples train of thought, is it any wonder there are so many road deaths and crashes from blind incompetent fools, not only those who cannot see, but those who refuse to help others see them.

I think some common sense has to be used in addition to whatever it might or might not say in the high way code.

If you actually look at the figures, headlights won't be anywhere near the top causes of crashes.

Of course they wouldnt....but if they had been used, some of the blind cunts out there might have seen the vehicle and not pulled out in front of it.

The problem is almost always blind cunts with no common sense.

I have to say when I started this thread I have been suprised at some peoples hostility and piss taking! To me its all about making sure you can be seen by other road users in all conditions that's all.

Exactly! And that is where this thread should end.

I wasn't aware about no main beam in built up areas at night but the rules are the rules. if everyone just decided to do what they think is best then itll end in carnage !

Cant really see why anyone would ever need to drive in a built up area with their main beam on ? It'd blind everyone.

Some people confuse main and dipped beam, calling the beam they mainly use (which is the dipped beam) the "main" beam. So I suspect it's just that.

Which, to be honest, makes perfect sense. I used to do the same until I worked at the AA and got told off

Had a little count on my way home from work this evening, 27 mile drive and approx 45 mins. 19 oncoming cars with either a headlight out or fog lights on, and 2 with no lights on at all, just their drl's. One of these on a pitch black dual carriageway, the other through a fairly busy high street.

If the police sat at the side of the road and dished out a 60 quid fine for each one with either fog lights on or defective headlights, they could earn over £1500 an hour!

The police have little interest in road safety matters, even despite they could rake in money too. And it shouldnt be £60 fines, it should be dangerous driving charges for those not using lights in a safe manner.

Although it should also be compulsory for car manufacturers to design headlights etc, and even rear lights where bulbs can easily be changed without the need for any tools.
Basic health and safety shit from the ground up when it comes to design.

It is another of my pet hates!! The number of cars/vans with only one headlight working or one side on high beam the other side low beam seems to increasing!! I agree that the Police should crack down on them more!!

When I was a bus driver, and thus spending 40+hours a week on the roads, the one that got me more than the knobs who don't put lights on, were the ones that had that one bright light - either cos they had the wrong bulb in it or a badly aligned headlight. That and the people who's brake lights were on 100% of the time, so you never knew if they were braking or not

I'd be surprised if they thought it was anything more than a nutter behind them flashing his lights and turning them off for a mile.

People driving around with no back lights on is the thing now...unbelievable ...If its to do with those front drls that are on all time, people must think their lights are on, when they are not, and if the dash lights up without even turning your lights on, that's the most idiotic thing ever...

With regards to drls and rear lights, Bmw seem to have got it right as my 3 series has the rear lights on with the drls, and when the lights are set to auto, the headlights come on with the slightest change of light conditions. During the winter the headlights are on most of the time. I can adjust the sensitivity of the light sensor but can't be arsed as I'd prefer the lights to come on too soon rather than too late.

DRL's are partly to blame. They see light at the front so assume their lights are on. DRL's should put the rear lights on aswell.

Someone above mentions the dash, the Focus Mk2's dash is lit up anyway, lights on or off is no different so you cant use that to tell. I do find that with light from other cars & street lights, its hard to tell sometimes if my lights are on.

You do get a green headlamp symbol come on on the dash though when your lights are on!
