Default 2002 Focus starting / running problem

My dad has a 2002 Focus 1.6 Ghia. It developed a running problem and now has a starting problem as well. My brother in law is a Mercedes technician and this is what he's tried so far:

Vehicle cranks but doesn’t fire.

- Removed fuel pump and checked. Pump activating.
- Checked spark at each cylinder and ok.
- Completed compression test and passed
. Checked HT leads and no issues
Cleaned throttle butterfly but still the same issue.

Managed to get the vehicle started once and as more throttle is applied vehicle cuts out.

Anyone had similar problems or have any ideas how to fix it?

Thanks in advance.

mass air flow sensor? crank sensor? even an air leak can cause this (if it didnt start at all id say definite crank sensor)

It needs plugging into a decent scanner before doing/changing anything matey to see any fault codes and also live readings. One thing u can Check is that when u crank the engine does the Rev counter move up very slightly? If so then u can tell it is getting a crank signal and can rule out the crank sensor then
