Sad to hear this but it is typical press getting it half right.

The bonnet vents would not put fumes in to the car surely. I can see the fumes coming in through the AIR vents inside the car but unless the exhaust was somehow leaking in the engine bay then how would the polluted air get in to the air intake.

The air intake is behind a bulkhead, if the fumes were comoing out the exhaust then they would find there way in anyway. The problem was surely that 1) it had no cat and 2) that they were sat at idle and somehow the dangerous exhaust gasses had somehow got in to the air intake.

I was thinking something the same, surely bonnet vents would vent the air out into the atmosphere, not the cars cabin. Doesn't really make much sense to me, still not nice though. R.I.P

I read that the gases were rising up through the vents, then being drawn in to the car via the air intake in the scuttle panel.

Very sad all the same.

the leak was between the turbo and the manifold. The presence, or rather lack of CAT was not the cause.
This event highlights the importance of proper workmanship. A lad posted a video up last night on the MK7 ST page of his newly bought CO alarm going off inside the car after sitting on idle for 10 minutes.

Yes, if the turbo and manifold (which seems were the actual cause) was not leaking then this would prob not have happened, if there was a cat and the fumes were only drawn back via the pipe then it would not have killed them in all likelihood.

I have heard of people trying to kill themselves in locked garages and the Cat saved them. (maybe not always)

So, I agree with the proper workmanship. I think even without the bonnet vents being there the fumes would have most probably found their way in to the air vents for the cabin.

What I don't get is that the fumes are quite unpleasant, you get horrible headaches and feelings before it does you the harm in most cases and that is in a closed environment...maybe they were asleep in the car with it running?

Sad loss at a young age!

Very sad. But surely they must of smelt the fumes, or is this younger generation really this stupid?

Apparently the pollen filter filtered out some of the gas, but not the carbon monoxide hence them not being able to smell it. How true that is dont know if the leak was bad enough to kill them.

Poor tom was just trying to get his willy wet

I love how they keep using the word modified, like modified cars are killing machines, what about if someone fitted an ill fitting exhaust from euro's and had the same thing happen, I've had the flexi's go on an e39 530d and started getting headaches when parked up as the fumes where being drawn into the cabin, the exhaust wasn't MODIFIED

A tragic story and it would make sense that the pollen filters took out the smell of the exhaust therefore giving the couple no warning that carbon monoxide gas was coming inside the car. A leaking exhaust in an older car is instantly recognised by the smell, as I have had this happen to me years ago and drove around with all the windows open until I got it fixed.

Pollen filters dont filter out smells....just drive behind any stinking diesel or shitbox and that's quite apparent.

And it has nothing to do with being modified, just plain and simple bad workmanship.
