Apparently the pollen filter filtered out some of the gas, but not the carbon monoxide hence them not being able to smell it. How true that is dont know if the leak was bad enough to kill them.
A tragic story and it would make sense that the pollen filters took out the smell of the exhaust therefore giving the couple no warning that carbon monoxide gas was coming inside the car. A leaking exhaust in an older car is instantly recognised by the smell, as I have had this happen to me years ago and drove around with all the windows open until I got it fixed.
