A tragic story and it would make sense that the pollen filters took out the smell of the exhaust therefore giving the couple no warning that carbon monoxide gas was coming inside the car. A leaking exhaust in an older car is instantly recognised by the smell, as I have had this happen to me years ago and drove around with all the windows open until I got it fixed.
