SMax 2.0l TDI wont run
Evening all, a neighbour over the road has a 2.0l diesel Smax and it had the EML light come on, took it to a garage that tuned it off and it was ok for a couple of days then came back on. While exiting the motorway the car lost all power and kicked out a ld of black smoke before going into limp home mode and he drove it home.
Then after that it wont run.
It starts, but cuts out after a second max.
Anyone got any ideas? The garage he took it to suggested the EGR valve is fucked, but it looks like a right git to get to.
I know fa about diesels so not been much help.

If it's coming up with egr then I'd change it or blank it off
Unfortunately egr's just clogg the inlet up with black soot... it's likely that it's that clogged up it's causing it not to start.

They all clog up because of the egr
But it could be jammed causing it to not start
I'd try a new egr

Well, i took the EGR off earlier (what a twat that was!) to find that the plunger part was not attached to the stem so was just letting all the exhaust gas through.
I made a little plate and blanked it off and low and behold the car starts and runs now, although the EML is on.
The chap has it booked in for the 30th so will keep the appointment and have it looked at still, but fingers crossed it will be ok in the meantime.
Cheers!

Best thing to do is blank them off and map them out... they cause nothing but trouble

Egr valve on my transit failed two months ago very similar symptoms, loads of smoke and zero power + EML.
The little valve head had separated from the shaft so was constantly open.

Is it sorted now then? Does the car not get many runs out. Imo modern diesels need a good run out to clear them out. There no good for stop start driving and for pottering around the town.

Anyone buying a modern diesel imo should budget for egr, dpf delete plus a remap
In the long run it'll cost you far less and you'll have a much more reliable car that drives right all the time
