SMax 2.0l TDI wont run

Evening all, a neighbour over the road has a 2.0l diesel Smax and it had the EML light come on, took it to a garage that tuned it off and it was ok for a couple of days then came back on. While exiting the motorway the car lost all power and kicked out a ld of black smoke before going into limp home mode and he drove it home.
Then after that it wont run.

It starts, but cuts out after a second max.

Anyone got any ideas? The garage he took it to suggested the EGR valve is fucked, but it looks like a right git to get to.

I know fa about diesels so not been much help.

All hoses on and intact?

Any service history, when did it last have a fuel filter replaced.

Will it run on a little bit of brake cleaner?

Fudgey 17-03-2017 09:20 PM

He tried to start it when i had my head under the bonnet. I couldnt hear anything funny but then it literally ran lumpy for a second each time.

No idea on last service, its on 120k odd miles i think. Ill ask tomorrow.

Is there a drain on the fuel filter? I did wonder about that.
And i dont have any brake cleaner lol

If it's coming up with egr then I'd change it or blank it off
Unfortunately egr's just clogg the inlet up with black soot... it's likely that it's that clogged up it's causing it not to start.

Fudgey 17-03-2017 11:08 PM

The inlet clogged or the egr? Or both?

As said, i know fa about diesels

Cheers bud

They all clog up because of the egr
But it could be jammed causing it to not start
I'd try a new egr

Fudgey 18-03-2017 02:08 PM

Well, i took the EGR off earlier (what a twat that was!) to find that the plunger part was not attached to the stem so was just letting all the exhaust gas through.
I made a little plate and blanked it off and low and behold the car starts and runs now, although the EML is on.

The chap has it booked in for the 30th so will keep the appointment and have it looked at still, but fingers crossed it will be ok in the meantime.

Cheers!

Best thing to do is blank them off and map them out... they cause nothing but trouble

I'll second that! Bad enough idea on a petrol but on a diesel it's a breakdown waiting to happen

Fuel pump?? Crank position sensor??

Adam-M 18-03-2017 10:19 PM

Egr valve on my transit failed two months ago very similar symptoms, loads of smoke and zero power + EML.

The little valve head had separated from the shaft so was constantly open.

Glenn_ 19-03-2017 10:29 AM

I take it this is the Peugeot engine??

Fudgey 20-03-2017 04:19 PM

Yes Glenn, used in pug, ford and volvo

it was exactly this

Is it sorted now then? Does the car not get many runs out. Imo modern diesels need a good run out to clear them out. There no good for stop start driving and for pottering around the town.

I think the days of diesels are numbered, I think fleet drivers who do mega mileage will still use them but I can't see the point in owning one for using in towns and city's anymore obviously
Apart from vans and lorries

Fudgey 21-03-2017 08:15 PM

Well, it runs but the EML is on. Needs a new EGR valve but i blanked it off for now.
As far as i know it still works lol.

Glenn_ 21-03-2017 09:41 PM

Egr valves. Nowt but bloody hassle. Just like them dpfs.

slammedorion 21-03-2017 10:28 PM

Anyone buying a modern diesel imo should budget for egr, dpf delete plus a remap
In the long run it'll cost you far less and you'll have a much more reliable car that drives right all the time
