One thing I have by my bed is a very bright torch. I've had it pointed at my eyes to see what you could actually do and it's ridiculous, even the smallest glance blinds you in the darkness temporarily.

But as others have mentioned, it's reacting in time. I have guns too and I'd never dream about using them obviously (and don't recommend you even say you would if you value your licence) but how could you even dream of getting up and getting the keys for the cabinet, unlocking it, getting your separately stored ammo etc.

What I rely on is noise to wake me before anyone gets as far as the bedroom. I have a dog, I also have internal door which is bolted from the top too which you'd have to make a racket with etc.

If you're intending to keep hold of your keys, don't just take them upstairs & think "I'll fight them". You need a plan of action if you're going to do that.

I was followed home years ago in my 3door RS500 rep, they were waiting for me outside my work and followed me all the way home. I was always paranoid about it and thought I'd lost them or was wrong, then just as I was closing the garage door they crept past glaring in. That night they cropped the padlock off the gate and garage and got half way through ripping th garage door off before giving up!

And on the subject of dogs, they aren't always going to help. My grand parents got turned over years ago and they drugged the dog. Dogs are greedy fucks and they'll be straight onto a cheap steak laced with something to knock them out or kill them.

that was my point, having shotguns and a licence aren't likely to be much good either if your taken by surprise! everyone thinks theyre an unbeatable hardman but its sometimes better to lose the fight and still be around to win the war and a dad with no car is of more use to your kids than a dad in a box.

Exactly, i have a shot gun license too, a firearms license is different as with one of those you can own high velcity rifles. A lot harder to get than a shot gun cert too.

as said, in this country, unless youre happy to be constantly in breech of your FAC, you have to keep them locked away.

Only useful gun would be a handgun loaded under the pillow. Something that will not be legal in this country in our lifetimes for sure.

I agree in an ideal world you should be able to have anything you want free from it being nicked.

However that simply isnt the case in our world. things are getting worse in that respect and will continue to do so. I imagine for many people there will come a point that the risk of theft and the negative consequences (eg violent robbery) will put them off having nice things as its just safer that way.

I suspect as the divide between rich and poor continues to grow, the level of violence these scum will use will continue to rise. mAybe im being pessimistic but wouldnt surprise me if it ends up with robberys on the wealthy (or just those better off than some others) getting more and more violent much like south africa. Except our laws dont allow us to have armed protection and guns or flame throwers to protect ourselves so it will be easy pickings for the most well armed, who in this county is always the criminals.

why bother with a sausage? if theyve got the kind or arsehole about them to beat you up to get the keys then they wont think twice about killing the dog.

when they are in and out in a few minutes, who cares about noise?

Same reason alarms are rarely a deterant to determined criminals.

some cunt kicks in your front door in a few seconds, batters the dog to death and will be in your bedroom with a knife to your neck before youve had a chance to unlock your phone, let alone diall 999.

Even if youve got a fancy all singing alarm that calls the cops, the response time simply isnt good enough in most areas to be a worry to criminals.

My dog won't bark until someone is actually at the door. He's only a pup and learning but he's learning quickly. They have got to be trained in the right way as to what you want them to react to but even at 8 weeks he knows his place. Only had him a fortnight but got him guarding our doors already and if I've got him out and someone comes over to us all I need to say is (Tell them to get) and he goes nuts. A month or 2 and he will be very intimidating

I've no idea, I've always thought if you don't need 999, go to A&E yourself, if you don't need A&E, wait for the doctors, if you don't need the doctors, shut up and get on with it

In the situation its definitely 999 and you don't need to put your security code into your phone first for 999. 101's for when you wake up in the morning and notice the cars already gone !

I put my house alarm on every night and omit upstairs zones when in bed.
My car and previous cars are left at my house all week as I have a works van
Keys are hidden during the day. I can only do what I can but if if someone want my stuff they will take it no matter what.

How come no-one's mentioned car jacking? If they spot a car they want and you have a regular routine all they have to do is wait until you get home and ask nicely to hand over the keys.

In fact, assuming there's four of them and one of you....bundle you in the boot without your phone and dump you a few miles away so it will take you longer to call the cavalry.

Think I don't want an RS or ST now and stick with my Escort.

Trouble is with all types of desirable cars, woman at my Mrs work had their house broken into this week whilst they were out. Believe they were looking for the key for the M4 sitting on the drive but they had the key with them so thieves didn't take car.

I also know 2 other families that got broken into over the past 12 months and had their car key and then car stolen.

It's rife Jason. For people to think it doesn't happen or won't happen to them,as far as I'm concerned it will happen if you have something nice that a thief takes a shine too then that's it gone

Their like bloody magpies. Makes me sick that we work bloody hard to get the things we have and they can just come along and take their pick and unless it's a serious crime the police aren't overly interested anymore. The main issue is the sentencing of this scum is a pure joke. They get community orders and the worst one suspended sentences that they break and just get time added into their suspended sentence, read about it all the time in our local paper people breaking the conditions and just get a fine and carry on their merry way. It's a bloody joke. Last year their was a local lad who got caught with thousands of images of child pornography and everyone was convinced he's going down for a long long time, sentence was 12 months prison suspended for 2 years, community service and probabtion. What sort of message is that sending out to the other perverts, they know they won't end up in jail getting abused like the poor kiddys they take so much pleasure in looking at. We've gone bloody soft

Not a truer word said. One of the many reasons for voting out of Europe in the hope we can get rid of such stupid human rights bullshit.

Someone please explain to me why a criminal in prison should get to vote. Ermmm, shouldn't they have lost their right to vote when they got their prison sentence

Europe doesnt have anything to do with our sentencing. that's our judges that keep letting them off the hook.

I agree 100%. The judges in this country are far to soft, the punishment should Fit the crime but it certainly doesn't when it comes to all the kiddie fiddlers that get a slap on the wrist and put on the register and told not to do it again

It seems they are more concerned about the welfare of the offender rather than the victims. Oh poor johny couldn't help it he was high on drugs and had drank a lot that day.

The concern for the welfare of the offender is down to human rights bollocks IMO. It's all gone far too far.

I've been In a Borstal when I was a little shit when I was a nipper (didn't steal just constant driving whilst disqualified in my own cars) and the only tv was something from the 70s you got to see on association and for the first 2 weeks u had to piss and shit in buckets and slop them out every morning. Tough old Victorian prison with no luxurys, was horrific, never again. A chap I know has just come out after 7 years, he had a telly in the cell (or room as they call it now) a PlayStation and a sneaked in mobile phone. Out the cell (room) all day for education, "work" and the gym. No wonder people don't care about being caught anymore
