Default Question for the CAD CAM people on here - MK - MT - people experienced in toolpaths

I've got this to make out of aluminium.

Jag diff cover with Sierra diff mount.

Is there any software out there that would recognise the shape of what I'm trying to produce from the solid model without laboriously picking individual bits of the profile and assigning tool paths for each part ?

Until recently I had assumed you just told the software what tool you were using, how much material you wanted left on for finishing and it worked it all out for you from the solid model

Up to this point I've never used a CAM program and always used Heidenhain parametric programming to get where I need to be.

Thanks in advance for any input

Yes it does

But I have to ask, why would you want to machine in one attempt?

From a time perspective it makes sense to rough it out then finish with a smaller cutter

Sorry mate, I did not explain myself properly.

I would like to set my x y z at the top middle of the the job.

Tell the software what cutter I wanted to use and how much to leave on and then spit out a tool path !

I would like to rough and finish in the conventional way.

Just wanted to know what software was capable of recognising the whole profile.

Ideally I would rough with a 25 dia round tipped cutter and then use a ball nose for picking out all the detail.

you would need to muti rough it with say 20,16,10,6 and depending on what rad you have in the bottom corners of the fins smaller mayby 3,4 ball nosed

Would say FeatureCam be capable of recognising the complete profile and just do what it can with a 25mm dia round tipped cutter if I wanted to just rough it all out to within 0.5mm for example ?

I understand that other steps would be needed, and it would obviously leave all the gaps between the fins.
