Golf GTI Clubsport S takes FWD 'ring record
I know some on here won't care because it's not a Ford but the new Golf GTI Clubsport S has recently taken the production FWD lap record at the 'ring with a time of 7:49.21. That's faster than the current production record of 7:54.36, held by the Megane Trophy, and almost a second faster than the time set by a pre-production Civic Type-R. Full story here: http://www.pistonheads.com/news/ph-g...ord--vid/34183
Whilst some of you might think: "So what?" take a look through the times on this page: https://nurburgringlaptimes.com/lap-times-top-100/
That's faster than a BMW M4 or a Lamborghini Murcielago, only just over two seconds slower than a Porsche 997 Turbo and only about 15 seconds off a Nissan GT-R.
They're only making 400 and I'm sure it won't be cheap, but it's pretty staggering just how fast a FWD hatch can be made to go and still come with a warranty!
Things have come a long way since the MK1 GTI and the likes of the RS Turbo and 205 GTI. I remember getting a 1.8 Escort and thinking it felt pretty nippy

10K+ Poster!!
That is truly impressive, I bet the engineers were under very strict instructions not to tamper with any settings on the ECU in fear of the emissions issue bollox.
To come in 2 seconds off a 997 Turbo is just crazy for a FWD car. Just goes to show how good suspension and tyres have become. I assume the Clubsport runs optional pilot cup type tyres?

Jesus! That's hell of a time! There are Porsche's and sport bikes that haven't done that!

There are only 150 coming to the UK and the only options are white paint, red or metallic black! all are 3dr manual's 310bhp no overboost crap like the normal clubsports just a proper turbo.
You can spec the tyres on with the 19" petoria alloys there a 2500k option and include dynamic chassis control, standard on the s but 2500 quid on the normal club.
I work at VW and tried to put my name down for a normal clubsport and got told no due to the limited numbers the S variant looks to be an animal and no doubt my car mad boss will have one knocking around the dealership next to the XL1 in the showroom.
If you have had the chance to drive a normal GTI golf I think you might find the chassis is painfully impressive the normal ones are wound so far back its ridiculous, bung a performance pack on with the beefy front diff and its mint :P.
Its about time VW got some properly stupid golf's in circulation although personally i am waiting for the up! gt

I've found that life I needed.. It's HERE!!
That really sounds like a weapon Typical understated VW looks too, very unassuming.
Some of the comments on PH are quite funny too, well folk are being twats to each other (again)...

That's a crazy quick time for a fwd car. I never even knew about these until my brother inlaw told me it was his next car and on order. He works for vw and got a massive discount but wouldn't tell me how much. Reckons he'll keep it a year sell it and still make a healthy profit. Will definitely be getting a 'proper' go in it
