To Track Or Not To Track
Hi folks, From searching around on here already I have noticed a few ST170 track slags are out there and I was wondering if they are any good?
I have at the moment as a side wench a ST170 in Imperial Blue with both option packs, rear parking and spoiler pretty much everything but the sunroof (like a ford needs a hole in the roof really). The thing is bloody mint apart from being a tad chippy on the paint and the bottoms of the back doors just starting to get tin worm which I plan to attack in summer. Full history 2 owners only 81k on the clock blah blah you get the idea.
My gripe is i want another track day car after blowing up a corsa 1.6 on MASSIVE cams i got the track bug. BUT the ST is just sat there as i daily use a golf GTI dsg but i dont know what to do with the foci.
Do I just sell it keeping it standard or do I make it into a track/fast road toy and smash its back doors in?
Any input would be welcomed as my head is in the shed with the matter.

being a 170 breaker myself I have around 5 kicking around, personally I would flog all the toys from your car to fund sorting it out as a track car as they do make good cars for this as they love being screamed through the gears, but bear in mind to sell anything on here you need goldmembership

When I drove my friends ST170 I thought the gearing was spot on for track and flawed for the road tbh. So should be ideally suited. I found 1st and 2nd really long and then 3rd upwards nicely stacked

I think deep down you no wot you won't to do . And the lads on here are all on the same page as me . You have the car so it won't cost you any thing to get one . Strip the trim out sell it off to fund some grades / brake pads /seat belts . And your good to go

I really want to get a second one to track but storage is an issue, If I was going to track it standard i know i would hate it I have seen a few going round that are standard and they lean like a volvo on a roundabout. It annoys me as a road car sometimes after owning a pair of st225's that just seemed stiffer yet comfortable.
I'm just not sure if i can rip it apart its too good and ive spent money tidying it up to make a good standard one.
Gah! I hate cars sometimes if i had somewhere to store it properly it would get hidden away for a few years till hopefully most of them have either been ripped apart or rotten away chance should be a fine thing!
The cams on the corsa i had no idea but they were pretty big and it ran like crap at low revs and on idle it would sit there going BOM BOM BOM rather than a smooth purr and for a 1.6 16v it would push redtops down the street.

you cant fix stupid
Just track it. I think your teasing yourself saying it's mint. Rust on doors and chipped paint is not mint. So it's not like your really ragging a minter so just go enjoy it for what it is. Add some mods like coilovers race fluids and track tyres and it will be good fun

After having my first bump in 7 years of driving in the golf yesterday morning I dont think i will be allowed another VW from work for some time! Lord Golfington goes back before long so then i will have to jump back into the 170 for the mean time till i come across a minter st225 with a sunroof and all the toys.
Think you are right steve upon reflection Ellie the 170 (named after the cd left in the player when i bought her) will be going on the track she is a clean daily but no show car unfortunately as much as i would like that to be true and i just cant part from her. Sad i know.
When you track yours Steve what sort of things are you up against in the corsa it was smashing mx5's but struggling like hell with type-r's.

As they say power is nothing without control. If your handling is sorted and your ballsy with your driving then you can shoot higher than type r. But it's all dependant on the driver and the setup of the cars your up against. Iv past lots of M3s on track. Older and newer 400 bhp models. But iv also had my butt handed to me by other M3s so the car has little to do with it sometimes. It's all down to tell driver.

I'm not known for going easy on my cars the phrase "balls deep" gets used a lot when referring to my driving when on track and lift of over steer/ four wheel drifting is something I go out of my way to try and do as much as possible.
How does yours do for consumables discs and pads, tyres etc? and how long do you give between services or is it just a swap the oil and filter out after every track day or two

Was running a few days and changing the oil but got racing oil in it now so il leave that on for maybe 5 or 6 possibly. It's not harsh on pads or discs really. I run ferodo ds3 000 which are very strong.
