Have just bought an 03 ST170 (limited number in oz) every guide I read (including the ford one) says that the timing belt kit is the same as the stock 2.0 Zebec. So I went and spent $150 and bought one.
Now everyone (on the ST Facebook page) tells me the tensioner is too "big" and won't be right. To save hundreds in garage fees and having a mechanic tell me to come back when I have the right parts I've ordered the "right" part from the UK for $198.
What is so different about the tensioners? How different can they really be? every one of them that I'c checked out for the ford is identical in the listed dimensions. 8mm bore 60mm diameter and 48mm overall depth.
Please hit me with what you know (especially of you used an aftermarket kit). There is no ford Dealer within 200kms of my city and the nearest dealer told me the part is no longer being made. I gave them the UK number and it didn't correspond to anything in Australia 2M5V6K254AA was the aussie number I was given for the exclusive tensioner.
I appreciate all your help.

Thanks 1-PD I actually bought one from fordpartsuk yesterday. Hope it will arrive before the 26th. Will definitely be measuring the UK one to try and grasp exactly what is different about it. People seem to say too big but I have no idea in which way its too big.

So the UK and OZ numbers seem to add up, they're the same unit but not brought to Australia anymore. They seem to have been used on other fords and mazdas and some of those have compatible part numbers also. The tensioners may look the same in the flesh but these are a list of tensioners that are not ZETEC ones apparently but would be interchangeable with the OZ/UK part numbered ones.

Firstly the bodies are constructed differently. The ST has an offset bore for the bolt whereas the Zetec one is more centralised. The amount of turn they can develop in order to tension the belt is also different. Finally the indexing lug on the Zetec tensioner is different to the ST so even though it has the same overall dimensions it just plain wont fit. pictures to follow
